Natural Trans Fats May Not Be As Bad As Manmade Ones...

Dear Reader,

Here's an intriguing finding. Trans fats that are found as a natural part of beef, pork, lamb, milk and butter are rather different from the more dangerous, artery clogging industrial trans fats made by man and added to all sorts of foods to help enhance their shelf life.

In moderation, natural trans fats do not appear as harmful as those produced by man according to a new study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Experts know that industrial trans fats usually raise LDL (bad) and lower HDL (good) cholesterol, two dangers in terms of heart health. But much less is known about the positive effects of the naturally occurring trans fats in foods. And since food makers are taking out the industrial kinds under pressure, the natural trans fat may soon be our only source. Is that something to worry about?

According to this latest study, involving 61 healthy women who ate a diet rich in natural trans fats for four weeks before having their blood cholesterol levels checked, there's no cause for concern.

Female subjects in the study didn't see an effect on total blood cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol or triglycerides after eating diets rich in foods with naturally occurring trans fats, the source was a butter enriched with natural trans fats (equal to 8 servings/day).

Some of the women saw a small drop in their HDL (good) cholesterol by eating this way, but there was a more pronounced effect in those who were overweight than for subjects at a more normal weight.

What this suggests is that we not throw the trans fat baby out with the bathwater according to David J. Baer, PhD from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He wrote an editorial that was published in the same journal as the study itself and points out that there are few studies that have tested the effects of natural trans fats; past work involved different doses, different ways of adding them to the diet and different groups of people. Certainly hard to draw a consensus from those findings.

No one is ready to make a "blanket statement" about the natural trans fats. Not yet.

Milk is a great example... a much-maligned food that's a source of nine essential nutrients and naturally occurring trans fats that aren't as harmful as manmade ones would be.

Finding trans fats on milk (or dairy product) labels isn't anything new, these have been part of milk since people started milking cows, and there doesn't appear to be a negative impact on risks for disease from the amounts most of us take in.

Natural Trans Fats May Not Be As Bad As Manmade Ones... Continued...

This latest study will certainly help clarify things, but we still have a long way to go in terms of our understanding of how the components naturally in a food might impact health. No one is ready to issue an "eat more of" or an "avoid" list just yet.

Doctors will continue to urge people to stick with nutritional guidelines, avoiding industrial trans fats and limiting the saturated fat (under 7% of total daily calories) that's in some meat and dairy products.

It's important to remember that in studies like this, the diets are carefully managed so the researchers can pinpoint the effect of one nutrient. That's not the way we eat in real life, so you should not take this research as a suggestion to start eating a particular food in bulk. Moderation in all things, along with exercise and other healthy lifestyle choices are your best bet when it comes to keeping your body, and heart, healthy.

To your good health,
