Study: Respiratory Problems More Likely With Soft Drinks...
Dear Reader,
Yet another reason to think before you choose that next drink... especially if it's going to be a soft drink. A new study in the journal Respirology suggests that those who drink a lot of these beverages might just increase their risk of asthma and/or COPD (also known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).
In South Australia, one in ten adults drink over a half a liter of these beverages each day. On this side of the planet, figures from the National Soft Drink Association (NSDA) suggest that consumption of these types of beverages is over 600 12-ounce servings per person per year.
The study took place in Australia, and nearly 17,000 subjects over 16 years of age were asked about how much soda they drank - Coke, Gatorade, Powerade, flavored mineral waters like Mizone and lemonade. Over 10% of the subjects said they drank over a half a liter of these drinks per day - that's about two 8-ounce glasses every day.
The team saw that 13.3% of the study participants diagnosed with asthma, and 15.6% of those with COPD drank more than the half liter of soft drinks a day. These subjects were 1.2 times more likely to have asthma, 1.7 times more likely to be diagnosed with COPD than those who didn't drink these beverages each day.
The risk appears to be dose related - the more you drink of these types of beverages, the higher your odds of having one of the two lung conditions.
Keep in mind that the research shows only an association between soft drinks and asthma and/or COPD, it does not demonstrate cause and effect. In other words, no one is saying that soft drinks cause COPD or asthma. Smoking increased the risk of COPD even further. If you smoked and drank over half a liter of soft drinks each day subjects had a 6.6 times higher risk of COPD than those who didn't smoke and drink these beverages.

Study: Respiratory Problems More Likely With Soft Drinks... Continued...
Asthma is a disease of the lungs that makes it harder to move air in and out.
It is a serious condition that can have life threatening consequences if not
properly managed. When someone who has asthma breathes in a trigger, the inside
of their airways make extra mucus and swell, narrowing the space for air to move
in and out of the lungs as it does normally. The condition can begin at any age
and is readily managed so that most patients live quite comfortably and normally.
COPD (also known as emphysema or chronic bronchitis) is one of the more common
diseases of the lung and remains third leading cause of death in the U.S. - clearly
a serious, life-altering disease. Smoking is the leading cause of this disease,
and the more you smoke the more likely you are to develop COPD. But since the
symptoms develop slowly, over time, you might not realize you even have this
condition.
A lung function test, administered by your doctor is the proper way to diagnose
this condition. While there is no cure, there are lots of things patients can
do to help themselves - stop smoking, use medications, oxygen therapy at home
and take antibiotics that are often given during a symptom flare to prevent an
infection that will make COPD worse.
The research on soft drinks and lung problems shows just how important it is
to eat and drink healthy to help prevent life altering diseases like COPD and
asthma according to study lead Dr. Zumin Shi, MD, PhD. who is from the University
of Adelaide. A diet full or fruits, veggies, whole grains and healthy beverages
- like water or diet drinks - as well as not smoking, are still the best ways
to keep your lungs healthy, strong and disease free.
To your good health,
Kirsten Whittaker
