Selenium Supplements: The Good and The Bad...

Dear Reader,

Selenium is a trace mineral vital to good health. Like other vital nutrients, too much of this good thing can be trouble, contributing to the onset of type 2 diabetes, loss of hair, even some cancers according to a new review of evidence that appears in The Lancet.

Selenium is a mineral that's naturally part of lots of foods, the amount depending a good deal on where your food is grown or farm animals are raised, as selenium content in soil varies. This mineral enters the food chain through plants, eaten by man or farm animals.

Some of the most common sources of this nutrient include Brazil nuts, chicken, fish and wheat. Selenium supplements are also available.

Margaret Rayman, the author of the review and a professor of nutritional medicine at England's University of Surrey explains that the relationship between selenium intake and health is a U shape, meaning that low intake brings health risks that decrease as the intake goes up.

Once intake levels rise beyond what is optimally beneficial, the adverse effects begin to appear, going up as the U goes up. The review of the medical literature found evidence that higher levels of selenium can bring greater risk of type 2 diabetes, skin cancers of the non-melanoma type, hair loss and rashes on the skin.

She found several projects that linked low selenium intake to a greater risk of death from all causes, cancers too. There also is evidence that selenium might impact how the immune system works. Rayman found research that suggests selenium supplementation decreased admissions to the hospital for infection in patients with HIV.

Selenium is also important to the brain according to the review. In a study of older adults, performance assessments of coordination were worse in those who had low selenium levels. Parkinson's disease was also more common in those who had low selenium levels, and this may also increase the risks of dementia.

The natural intake of selenium is high in areas such as the United States, Japan, Canada and Venezuela. It's lower in some parts of China and in Europe.

Selenium Supplements: The Good and The Bad... Continued...

An average daily intake of this nutrient is 60 micrograms for men; 53 micrograms for women. Intake varied widely in the work reviewed from as little as 7 micrograms a day to a high of 4,990 micrograms a day.

Europe's average intake was 40 micrograms a day; the U.S. had an average daily intake of 93 micrograms for women; 134 micrograms for men.

Some of this may come from supplementation, especially in the U.S. where almost half the population use dietary supplements on a regular basis. Selenium is often a part of many popular multivitamin products and is known to help you face off against viruses, increase reproduction in both men and women, and cut the risk of autoimmune thyroid disease, maybe even cancer.

A blood test to assess your current selenium levels will let you know where you stand... if you're getting enough from what you eat. Even without the blood testing, if you live in North America, you can be confident that you don't need added selenium. This may not be true for those living in Europe. If you're concerned, talk with your own doctor about this first, before you start supplementing or eating more than your share of natural sources.

To your good health,
