Fight Age Related Memory Loss With Berries...

They're delicious... they're good for you... and now a new review published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry finds that berries might also keep your memory sharp as you age.
From the review by authors Barbara Shukitt-Hale, Ph.D. and Marshall Miller, both from the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University we find strong evidence that eating berries not only improves brain function, but might also protect against age related memory loss. And the effects are significant.
The team examined recent research on the effects of berries on brain signaling as well as internal communication and behavior. The review finds that cellular, animal and even human studies have confirmed berries offer a benefit to the aging brain
- High antioxidants help protect brain cells from damage from free radicals.
- Changes the way the neurons in the brain communicate, preventing inflammation that can, over time, bring on brain cell damage. The result would improve both motor control and cognition.
- The polyphenols that give berries their rich red or blue color are known to activate proteins that clean up damaged cells, breaking down and recycling toxins thought to be involved with age related mental decline.
The net result is that berries may stall age related brain diseases like dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
Studies in humans have shown that supplementing with berries brings down inflammation. Grapes and blueberries have been found to improve mild mental impairment in older adults. There is also promising work that berries might help hold off dementia as well. One study found that mulberries worked to prevent oxidation stress in lab cells that had been infected with Parkinson's disease.
Another human study found higher antioxidant levels could be seen after participants
ate cranberries, blueberries and strawberries. Eating these fruits with a high
fat meal was found to decrease the inflammation that other subjects who hadn't
eaten berries experienced. You knew berries were good... now science is finding
out just how good they may really be.

Understand this - while it's natural to forget things (phone numbers, a name
or anniversary)... memory loss as you age is NOT inevitable. The brain can produce
