Lower Blood Pressure With Supplements Of This Vitamin...

Dear Reader,

Just about one in three U.S. adults have high blood pressure, a silent, symptomless condition that ups the risk of heart disease and disabling stroke. The goal of treatment is to bring those blood pressure readings to under 140/85 for most people, even lower for those with diabetes, chronic kidney disease and for African Americans.

Across all the research, some on healthy adults, others on those diagnosed with high blood pressure, taking vitamin C supplements appears to bring down both systolic (top) and diastolic (bottom) pressure in just two months. The experts looked at data from 29 different experiments that included 1,400 adults who were aged 22 to 74 years old. The median dose of vitamin C was 500 milligrams a day over a medium eight-week period.

In those who had high blood pressure, the top (systolic) number dropped by almost 5 points, while the bottom (diastolic) number went down by 1.7 points. A modest blood pressure lowering effect when supplementing with vitamin C according to researcher Edgar "Pete" R. Miller III, MD, PhD who is an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Important to understand that some of the studies examined were small, and in some cases the supplements of vitamin C were taken with blood pressure medications. These findings do not suggest that the supplement is a natural treatment for high blood pressure, or should replace your current medication. Also... it's not proven that taking vitamin C for longer than two months will have a lasting impact on blood pressure.

And while the drop is not all that dramatic, experts know that if the all the adults in the U.S. were to lower their blood pressure numbers by 3 points we'd have a lot fewer strokes.

Beyond supplements, some of the best food sources of vitamin C include red peppers, oranges, grapefruits and kiwi. If you're an adult female you should be taking in 75 milligrams of vitamin C a day, adult men should be at 90 milligrams a day. The Institute of Medicine has set a daily maximum intake considered safe - 2,000 milligrams of vitamin C per day for adults.

There has been earlier research suggesting a link between higher intakes of vitamin C from food or supplements and lower blood pressure numbers. Evidence of this effect in clinical trials hasn't been consistent.

Lower Blood Pressure With Supplements Of This Vitamin... Continued...

It's too early to suggest taking vitamin C supplements daily as a treatment for high blood pressure without having the research on the implications of following this approach over the long term. We do know that blood pressure that is not well controlled can ultimately cause trouble for blood vessels in the eye, a thickening of the heart not to mention dangerous heart attacks, kidney failure, hardening of the arteries and strokes.

When it comes to managing your high blood pressure, you'll want to make changes to what you eat (reducing salt intake, coffee intake, alcohol intake), smoking and how active you are as well as stick to whatever medication regimens your doctor has prescribed for you. This will give you the best chance of managing your high blood pressure - vitamin C supplements or not.

To your good health,
