US Scientists Shocking Warning: Sugar Can Make You Dumb...

Dear Reader,

It's a shocking finding - eating too much sugar can also eat away at the power of your brain - actually making your dumber. What's worse, this can be accomplished in as little as six weeks according to University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) researchers who have demonstrated the impact of fructose on the brain in the laboratory using rats fed a steady diet of high fructose corn syrup.

The findings show us that this all too common sweetener is not just bad for the body (contributing to weight gain, dental problems, higher triglycerides), but may be very bad for the brain as well.

To conduct the work, the team of researchers fed two groups of rats a solution of high fructose corn syrup as their water for a six-week test period. One group of rats also got brain boosting omega-3 fats, in the form of flaxseed oil and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), while the other didn't.

Before the rats were given the sugar drinks, they were trained during a five-day session on a complex maze. After the six-week test period consuming the sugared solution, the rats were put back into the maze to see how well they would manage.

The DHA deprived subject animals were slower, and their brains demonstrated a drop in synaptic action according to researcher Fernando Gomez-Pinilla who is a professor of neurosurgery from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. The brain cells of the rats had trouble signaling to each other, and this disrupted the animal's ability to think clearly and bring to mind the route they'd learned to navigate the maze six weeks before.

Looking closer at the rat brains showed the researchers that those who didn't get the DHA supplements had signs of resistance to insulin. This hormone is known to control blood sugar, but is also involved in regulating the functions of the brain. Since it can cross the blood-bran barrier, it may well signal neurons to react in ways that disrupt the learning process and also cause loss of memory.

Put simply - eating more fructose than you should can cause problems with insulin's ability to regulate how cells use and store sugar. In the brain the hormone appears to cause disruptions in memory and learning. It seems fair to say that what you put in your body may well be impacting how you think. Eating this way over the long term actually appears to change the way your brain operates - impacting its ability to learn and recall information. The good news is that if you do eat this way, adding some omega-fats to your diet may help minimize the damage that's done.

US Scientists Shocking Warning: Sugar Can Make You Dumb... Continued...

High fructose corn syrup is in just about anything we eat or drink today. You'll find it in sodas and fruit flavored drinks, applesauce, baby food, condiments and loads of processed snacks. It's the most common added sweetener used in the production of today's popular processed foods and drinks. Estimates from the US department of Agriculture suggest the average American consumes over 40 pounds of high fructose corn syrup each year.

If you're concerned about what high fructose corn syrup is doing to your body and mind, try to limit yourself to no more than 100 calories (6 teaspoons) a day of added sugar if you're a woman; 150 calories (9 teaspoons) a day for a man. Even less is better. You can cut back by avoiding sugar laden soda - drink water instead. Choose your breakfast cereals with care - skip sugar coated, frosted choices. Eat fewer processed or packaged goodies like cookies, cakes and some microwave meals. Snack on veggies, fruits, low-fat cheese or whole grain crackers or low fat yogurt instead.

The research appears in the Journal of Physiology.

To your good health,
