Vigorous Exercise Protects Against This Skin Condition...

Dear Reader,

A new study appearing online in the Archives of Dermatology finds that vigorous exercise (running or aerobics, for instance) may help cut the risk of the skin condition psoriasis. The findings are drawn from subjects (all women) taking part in the longstanding Nurses' Health Study. Earlier work has shown that men could also reduce the chance of this skin condition with some vigorous workouts.

Over ten years ago, Siba Raychaudhuri, MD found that both men and women psoriasis patients who were active were likely to have less severe disease. Even walking was helpful, though that level of activity wasn't studied here.

Psoriasis is known to bring redness and irritation, leaving most patients with a skin surface that looks thick and red and is covered by flaky, silver white patches known appealingly as scales. It's most often found on the elbows, knees and midsection of the body. While it's not contagious, anyone can get psoriasis, with the most often onset between 15 and 35 years old.

To conduct the latest research, the team followed almost 87,000 nurses for a period of 14 years. No one had been diagnosed with psoriasis when the study started. Over the course of the research, the subject nurses filled out three detailed questionnaires about how active they were, and were also asked to report if they'd ever been diagnosed with psoriasis. A total of 1,026 nurses were diagnosed with psoriasis during the study.

When compared with no vigorous activity, being vigorously active was associated with a 25% to 30% lower risk of psoriasis. Vigorous means the equal of 105 minutes of running at a pace of 6 miles per hour each and every week. What's more, the association remained impressive even after the researchers accounted for BMI, age, smoking status and use of alcohol.

Only running, aerobic exercise or calisthenics were associated with the reduced risk, other vigorous workouts like playing tennis, swimming, biking and jogging were not. It may be that the highly variable intensity of these actions explains the lack of an association with psoriasis risk.

The intensity of the workout is the key here according to researcher Abrar Qureshi, MD, MPH, the vice chair of dermatology at Brigham and Women's Hospital and an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School.

As to why vigorous exercise works, the team speculates that it might be due to a reduction in inflammation over the entire body system. A rigorous workout also brings down anxiety and stress, and this could also be important. Doctors know that new cases and exacerbations of the disease are caused by these unpleasant feelings.

Vigorous Exercise Protects Against This Skin Condition... Continued...

You should remember that this is but a single study, and the findings should be looked at with care. It may still be that those who exercise more are also more health conscious in other ways, as yet to be studied, that also provide protection from psoriasis.

Estimates from the National Psoriasis Foundation suggest as many as 7.5 million people in the U.S. have this uncomfortable skin condition. Doctors think it happens because the body's immune system mistakes healthy cells for something more dangerous. Psoriasis is considered the most common autoimmune disease with both men and women being equally affected. Earlier studies have found that higher body mass index, a family history of this skin condition; use of alcohol and smoking can be tied to an increased risk of the condition.

If you're concerned about your own risk, an exam by a doctor can usually tell you if you have the condition. Once you know where you stand, there are treatments available that can help.

To your good health,
