Research On Men, Meat And Masculinity...
Dear Reader,
As if any woman needed research to assure her of this. Yet a new study appearing in the Journal of Consumer Research tells us just that - we all associate meat with maleness. This makes healthier, less red meat intense and more veggie oriented meals seem both unappealing and less than masculine. What real man would want to eat that way? The researchers themselves acknowledge the difficulty - red meat is a traditional, macho, all-American food; soy... not so much.
For the work the team, led by psychologist Paul Rozin from the University of Pennsylvania, conducted a series of projects that tested metaphors associated with the food we eat. Using word associations and other techniques, the researchers saw that those who come from Western cultures link manliness with red meat - especially steak.
Meat was associated with more masculine words and meat eaters considered more masculine than those who choose veggies instead. The researchers also saw that meat was associated with male gender in 23 different languages that give a gender to some words.
Why this might be is unclear. Perhaps is has something to do with the association between strength and power and the muscle tissue that is the basis for meat. Or maybe the macho actions called for to get it - tracking and hunting - are responsible for keeping the association so entrenched. Whatever the reason, men appear to be uneasy about picking a vegetable over a meat source when it comes to eating.
All well and good... except that the health risks tied to red meat loaded diets are becoming more obvious than ever before. One piece of research from the Harvard School of Public Health found that eating just one serving of red meat every day was associated with an increased risk of dying early. Each daily serving of red meat upped the risk of early death by 12%, while daily servings of processed (hot dogs, ham, bacon) meats, brought the risk of early death up to 20%.
A curious finding of the research was that cooking and processing of food tended to be linked to the feminine, except for those medium rare or well-done steaks. So chicken salad was seen as more feminine than say a broiled chicken.

Research On Men, Meat And Masculinity... Continued...
And while we know the meat equals macho thought process might be out of date,
it's well entrenched and will be difficult to dislodge, even as plant based diets
become more mainstream. It's more than just health addicts who are following
these eating plans today - even professional athletes are eating this way.
Interesting to note that nonprofit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine
(PCRM) is trying to promote the idea of healthier eating to men. The latest program
features macho players from the NBA, as well as firefighters and ultramarathoners
talking up the benefits of eating a plant based diet. And what it does for their
performance. Another option to get men to see plant based foods as more manly
is to make them look more like the meat men know. So a soy burger could have
grill marks so it looks more like a traditional grilled burger.
If you're interested in getting started on a plant-based diet, the change doesn't
have to be abrupt and all-inclusive. Try cutting red meat from your diet on just
one day a week. Making a small change like this is a smart way to ease yourself
into a taste for different foods. Or, try adding healthier options to that burger
- soy cheese for example, or choose a salad instead of those fries.
To your good health,
