More Proof: These Healthy Habits Can Fight Disease...

When it comes to staying healthy, preventing disease before it strikes seems an obviously sensible thing to do. Yet too many of us don't, and our doctors are left to focus on treating illness once it's taken hold.

Now a total of five new studies offer yet more evidence that engaging in healthy habits along with getting preventive care are able to protect people against some pretty devastating diseases. Diseases that not only impact health, but happiness and quality of life as well.

The studies, all appearing recently in the American Journal of Medicine investigated...

1. How eating fish can cut risk of colon and rectal cancer. Chinese researchers under lead author Daiming Fan of the Fourth Military Medical University examined 41 studies that were published between 1990 and 2011. They saw that regularly eating fresh fish cut the risk of colon cancer by 4%, rectal cancer by 21%. Colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in the Western world, yet experts are well aware that those who live in parts of the world that eat lots of fish are less likely to develop either of these diseases.

2. How regular teeth cleaning improves heart health. A team of researchers in Taiwan, led by H-B. Leu, MD, of Taipei Veterans General Hospital, found that regular tooth scaling is linked to a lower risk of heart attack and stroke, as well as other cardiovascular "events". They examined nearly 11,000 subjects who had undergone the deep cleaning procedure and 11,000 who didn't, and found that over a 7 year follow up; the tooth scaling group had a reduced incidence of cardiovascular events than did the group who didn't have the deep cleaning. What's more, the more often a subject underwent the tooth scaling, the lower their risk of cardiovascular events.

3. How primary care physicians can help patients lose weight. An American team of researchers led by William C. Haas, MD, of East Carolina University located in Greenville, NC saw that moderately obese patients who used a weight loss program supervised by their primary care physician lost as much weight (11% over 12 weeks) as those who used a weight loss center, but lost more fat than those using the weight loss centers.

4. How low dose aspirin can cut cancer risk. Canadian researchers led by Edward J. Mills, PhD, MSc, of the University of Ottawa, Ontario, examined 23 studies and found conclusive evidence that low dose aspirin has cancer preventing abilities. This treatment is commonly suggested to help prevent heart disease, so many people are already using it.

5. How hypnosis and acupuncture can help you quit smoking. Canadian researchers lead by Mark J. Eisenberg, MD, MPH, of McGill University, found that smokers were 4.6 times more likely to quit if they tried hypnosis, 3.5 times more likely to quit if they had acupuncture compared to those who were trying to quit but didn't have the treatments.

The good news for all of us is that all five studies show that disease can be halted, if we take the steps to make the necessary changes now while you are in good health.
