Quality Of Life For Older Adults Improved With High Levels Of This Vitamin...
Dear Reader,
You know that not having enough vitamin D in the body has been associated with many health problems... things like obesity, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Here's some news on another reason to be sure you're getting enough of this essential nutrient. New research finds that not having enough of vitamin D might be a contributing factor to the mobility limitations and outright disability of old age.
The work, funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, appears online in the Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences and involved following over 3,000 subjects between the ages of 70 and 79 for a total of six years.
All the subjects were living on their own and had no trouble walking a quarter of a mile, climbing ten steps and managing the basics of daily living when the study began. They were also free of life threatening diseases, just over half were men, about one third were African American.
The researchers measured vitamin D levels early on in the study. They saw that 29% of subjects had levels of less than 50 nanomoles per liter (nmol/L), while 36% had vitamin D levels between 50 and 75 nmol/L and about 25% of the subjects had levels over 75 nmol/L.
At the end of the research period, 2,099 subjects were still available to talk about their mobility. Researchers saw that those who had the lowest levels of vitamin D when the study started had a 29% higher risk of a mobility limitation (two or more episodes of difficulty) by the end of the research - and 2 times the risk of a mobility disability (severe difficulty or inability to perform) as those who had the highest levels of vitamin D at the start of the study.
Even after adjusting for age and other variables, the levels of vitamin D showed an association with mobility. Still there are many factors involved, and it will take time for experts to understand them all.
You've probably heard that your body produces vitamin D naturally when you're out in the sun. Of course fears of skin cancer have us loading up on products that protect the skin and impact the ability to synthesize the nutrient. Or perhaps avoiding the sun altogether.
Another factor is also at work here. As we age, our natural ability to absorb and process the ultraviolet light of the sun isn't as effective - we just can't make enough vitamin D from sunlight as we once could.
Vitamin D is also super important to muscle function. It's needed to deliver calcium into the muscles, and this helps the muscle contract. Interesting too that muscles are naturally equipped with their own vitamin D receptors.

Quality Of Life For Older Adults Improved With High Levels Of This Vitamin... Continued...
As our population grows older, medical professionals are looking for ways to
reduce disability - to help with quality of life and the terrible financial costs
as well. Taking vitamin D supplements might be one thing that could reduce the
risk of life altering disability according to study author Denise Houston who
is an assistant professor at the Sticht Center on Aging at Wake Forest School
of Medicine. Still, she does not suggest, on the basis of this observational
study, that older people start taking vitamin D supplements in the hope of preventing
mobility limitations later on.
A randomized, controlled clinical trial is needed before anyone can say for sure
that vitamin D can help prevent disability in older people. This is the "gold
standard" in medical research because study participants are chosen at random
to receive a treatment or be given a placebo instead.
In the meantime, old or young, do what you can to get the nutrients, including
vitamin D, that your body needs. The current recommendations for intakes of vitamin
D are 800 international units a day for anyone over 70 years old, but many experts
think the levels should be far higher. You can find food sources of this nutrient
in fortified milk and juice, fish like salmon or tuna, egg yolks, cheese and
mushrooms.
To your good health,
