Selenium Associated With Lower Risk Of Diabetes...
Dear Reader,
Very intriguing. The risk of developing type 2 diabetes was as much as 24% lower for those who had a diet rich in the trace mineral selenium compared to those who didn't take in as much according to a new study by U.S. experts. The findings appear in the journal Diabetes Care and come from an examination of just about 7,000 male and female subjects, all health care workers free of heart disease or type 2 diabetes who were followed for many years.
These findings join a mixture of results on the effectiveness of selenium, especially when it comes to diabetes. In the latest research just over 7,000 participants drawn from the Nurses' Health Study and Health Professional Follow-Up Study contributed samples (toenail clippings) between 1982 to 1987; while also answering detailed questionnaires about what they ate, lifestyle factors and illnesses over the next 20 years. Surprisingly, toenail clippings are able to accurately reflect the accumulation of the mineral selenium in the body over about a year.
Just over 10% developed type 2 diabetes in the years that followed. This rate is thought to be lower than what you'd find in the general population, as the participants were all health care workers. In fact, for both the male and female study subjects, the chances of developing type 2 diabetes were 24% lower among those with the highest levels of selenium in their toenail samples compared to those with the lowest levels.
Even the researchers who conducted the study aren't suggesting you run out for selenium supplements. Turns out there are many different kinds of this mineral, and supplements only have one type. They emphasize that a healthy diet is what you need, not the supplement of the day. Choosing natural sources of this nutrient such as healthy grains, fish and Brazil nuts among other foods is a far better strategy in the long run.
Also of note; the study subjects who had higher levels of selenium in the body also reported eating more whole grains and taking in less saturated fats, alcohol or coffee. They were less likely to be smokers than those who had lower levels of the mineral in their bodies. These factors could also have played a role in not developing type 2 diabetes.

Selenium Associated With Lower Risk Of Diabetes... Continued...
Experts recognize that antioxidants like selenium offer some protection against
chronic illness, including type 2 diabetes. Selenium supplements have grown in
popularity as a result, but the mineral is best taken in naturally from foods
like the ones mentioned above. In some areas selenium occurs naturally in high
concentrations in the soil, and this will affect the exposure of those who live
close by, as well as the natural selenium content of any food grown there.
Selenium levels in the general U.S. population are generally high because of
the high selenium content in the soil in some areas of the nation. Recommendations
from the Institute of Medicine, and advisory body to the U.S. government, suggests
most adults get 55 micrograms of selenium per day. As a point of reference, a
bagel gives you almost 27 micrograms; one egg 15 micrograms.
Getting toxic levels of selenium is rare, but officials suggest an upper limit
of no more than 400 micrograms a day in order to avoid potential side effects
- selenosis is a condition that has symptoms like stomach issues, hair loss and
even mild damage to nerves. What's more experts warn, the difference between
the helpful effect and the harmful effects is pretty slim - a little bit is good,
but above a certain level can bring side effects that are none too pleasant.
To your good health,
