Daytime Sleepiness Linked to These Two Unwanted Conditions...

Dear Reader,

While we all have days when we drag our wagons a bit... for some excessive sleepiness gets in the way of work, relationships and even leisure time. Almost 20% of U.S. adults have reported excessive daytime sleepiness according to the National Sleep Foundation.

New research shows that being obese or feeling depressed could make it more likely that you'll feel extra sleepy during the day. It's not that poor sleep at night isn't behind some of that daytime sleepiness, but depression and obesity are the strongest risk factors.

Three studies on daytime sleepiness, presented at Sleep 2012 held this year in Boston, brought some much needed attention to this disruptive disorder, and what can be done about it.

One of the best things you can do for yourself, if you need to, is lose some weight. In one of the studies Alexandros Vgontzas, MD, a professor of psychiatry at Penn State found that when subjects lost the extra pounds they felt noticeably less sleepy during the day.

Another study involved 1,173 subjects who were not excessively sleepy during the day. The team kept track of their BMI and any health conditions (such as high blood pressure or depression) for the seven years that followed. The participants were also tested for sleep apnea, the disorder where people have episodes when they actually stop breathing while they are asleep. Having sleep apnea, and getting a poor night's sleep are often to blame for excessive sleepiness during the daytime.

As this study progressed 138 subjects (8%) reported excessive daytime sleepiness. The odds of having this condition were nearly 3 times as high in depressed subjects, more than two times as high in obese subjects and those who had sleep apnea.

Daytime Sleepiness Linked to These Two Unwanted Conditions... Continued...

The second study presented by Vgontzas and his team found that among obese people, excessive daytime sleepiness was more persistent in those with the higher BMIs, and those whose daytime sleepiness persisted, were more likely to gain weight. This research provides strong evidence that BMI may be associated with daytime sleepiness.

The final piece of research to be presented at Sleep 2012 included 103 male and female subjects who were overweight, screened for depression and studied in a sleep lab. Those who slept longer at night were also sleeping during the day, and this goes against the idea of sleep deprivation being to blame for daytime sleepiness. In this last study, waist circumference and depression most strongly predicted subjective sleepiness.

Other physicians have seen daytime sleepiness decline after a weight loss. As the pounds leave your body, so too does the risk for depression and sleep apnea - what's more, you'll have more energy and a wonderful feeling of control and empowerment to boot. Of course you'll also want to combat daytime sleepiness by being sure you do get enough rest at night, practice good sleep habits and get enough daytime exercise. If you've tried all this, and are still struggling with daytime sleepiness, you should see a sleep specialist as you may have an entirely treatable disorder that has yet to be diagnosed.

To your good health,
