Seven Common Sun Myths, Exposed At Last
Dear Reader,
Just because the summer's almost over, don't let your guard down in terms of sun protection, for yourself and your children. While melanoma in children is rare, between the years 1973 and 2001, childhood melanomas increased nearly 3% each year. While there's no need to worry about a few skin imperfections on your children, Only if you have a family history of skin cancer and your child is fair and/or has many moles is a visit to a dermatologist is probably in order.
As the days of summer wane, keep up your efforts to be smart about the sun and don't fall victim to these seven rather common myths about sun exposure.
1. A suntan is fine, just so long as you don't get a burn. The truth is, you are still at risk even if you never burn. The more sun you get, the more likely you are to develop certain skin cancers. Any tan, no matter what your skin tone, signals damage to the skin.
2. A beach umbrella blocks the sun. While that umbrella certainly helps, the sand reflects 17% of UV radiation, so you are still being exposed to harmful rays. You'll want to add sunscreen even if you plan on taking shelter under the umbrella the whole day.
3. Sun can't penetrate windows. The reality is that glass can only filter out one type of radiation, the UVB rays. The trouble is UVA rays, that penetrate deeper into the skin surface, can still get through. Your best bet is to apply sunscreen to any exposed skin before getting in the car, especially during spring and summer. Tinted windows also help by filtering up to four times more UVA light than clear glass. Indoors, you only need to apply sunscreen if you spend most of your time near a window.
4. Too much sunscreen causes vitamin D deficiency. While it's true that exposure to natural sunlight is needed to produce vitamin D, we also get this nutrient from food, multivitamins and vitamin D fortified foods. What's more, even when wearing sunscreen, small amounts of UV rays still get through and this is enough to produce the vitamin D your body needs.

Seven Common Sun Myths, Exposed At Last Continued...
5. If is cool or cloudy, you don't need sunscreen. The thing us, up to 80% of
sunburns happen on overcast days. Even in winter, snow can reflect up to 80%
of UV rays, which ups your exposure as you enjoy winter activities. What's more,
the higher your altitude, the greater your UV exposure, so be sure to pack sunscreen
on that ski vacation.
6. A whopping 80% of sun damage happens before you are 18. Not true. Recent studies
show that we get under 25% of our lifetime sun exposure before age 18. You get
the majority of it after this point. So don't just be vigilant about sunscreening
your kids - do yourself as well. Remember, kids are not just listening (ignoring)
what you say, they are watching what you do.
7. Cover ups offer fine sun protection. Actually that white tee shirt has an
SPF of about 7, and once it gets wet, the number drops to 3. The best way to
see if clothing will protect you outside is to hold it up to the light. If you
can see through the material, than UV radiation can penetrate as well. You can
try a laundry aid like SunGuard, or some treated SPF clothing as alternatives.
To your good health,
