Study: Exercise May Shield Aging Brain
Dear Reader,
We all know exercise is incredibly good for us... now the results of a trio of new studies show us just how good. Exercise appears to provide protection against memory loss and Alzheimer's disease in older people. What's even better; there are a variety of physical activities that are linked with healthier, sharper brains. And with reports predicting that as many as 10 million baby boomers may be diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, there's never been more interest in keeping the aging brain healthy.
The research, presented at the Alzheimer's Association 2012 annual meeting include...
· One study by U.S. researchers at three universities saw that normally sedentary older people who walked at a moderately intense pace on a track for 30-45 minutes, three times each week got a measurable benefit. At the end of the year long study, MRI scans of the brain found the hippocampus, the part of the brain involved with memory, actually was enlarged by 2%.
· A second project out of the University of British Columbia and the University of Illinois, Urbana found that twice weekly resistance workouts help women, aged 70 to 80 who already had signs of mild mental decline, improve the scores they got on thinking and memory tests. After just six months, the weight training group had significantly improved performance on tests of both memory and attention. There were also functional changes in three areas of the brain involved in memory
· The third bit of research, this time out of Japan's National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology, examined 47 older people who had mild memory issues. Those who did 90 minutes of supervised exercise two times a week for a year showed improvement on a memory task and tests to measure their ability to use language.
By themselves none of the studies give medical pros a clear prescription for slowing down mental decline, but examined together, they certainly add to a growing body of knowledge that suggests being physically active is critical for healthy aging of the brain. Heather Snyder, the senior associate director of medical and scientific relations at the Alzheimer's Association agrees that the three studies strengthen the importance of exercising as you get older in order to reduce the risk of debilitating Alzheimer's disease and other types of mental decline.

Study: Exercise May Shield Aging Brain Continued...
Medicine does know that sometime between 50 and 55 years old an adult will naturally lose about 1% of their brain volume each year. Marked shrinking of the hippocampus is often considered a sign of Alzheimer's disease. Now science is coming to realize that this area of the brain remains very plastic all through life, and that not only can we stop it from getting smaller, but we can increase the size of this vital region in a relatively short span of time.
What's more, subjects who had larger hippocampus also had higher levels of brain-derived neurotropic factor, BDNF for short, which suggested to the team that they had an overall healthier brain. BDNF is key to memory, learning and other brain activities.
Science has yet to understand how all the pieces fit together and experts are far from saying that one type of workout or activity is better for the brain than any other. But until medicine can come up with a cure, preventing terrible, life-altering brain diseases is the best, most effective thing we can do.
To your good health,
