Study: Curry Compound Might Cut Risk Of Diabetes

Dear Reader,

A remarkable finding... supplements that naturally carry a compound that's part of curry spice might prevent diabetes in those at high risk according to a new Thai study. The work appears in the American Diabetes Association journal Diabetes Care and found a daily dose of curcumin was able to hold new cases of diabetes for those with prediabetes at bay. For the prediabetes population at least, curcumin extract might be a smart intervention says study lead Somlak Chuengsamarn from the Srinakharinwirot University located in Thailand.

Earlier work in the lab has shown curcumin is able to fight inflammation and oxidative damage to the cells of the body. Both of these are believed to be precursors to many different diseases, including type 2 diabetes. Beyond being used as a spice in India Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern cooking, curcuminhas been used in India as a medicine for hundred of years.

This most recent research on the spice and diabetes involved 240 Thai adults who had prediabetes and were randomly assigned to either take curcumin capsules or a placebo for nine months. The capsules with curcumin each had 250 milligrams of curcuminoids inside. At the end of the study 19 of the 116 placebo patients had type 2 diabetes, none of the 119 subjects taking curcumin did.

It appears the supplement improves the workings of beta cells, the cells in the pancreas that release insulin, the hormone known to regulate blood sugar. It may be that anti inflammatory effects are what keep these cells from being damaged and disease being diagnosed.

Prediabetes is serious business, with an estimated 57 million in the U.S. having the disease without even knowing it. People often don't have symptoms, or they've come on so gradually, over time, that you don't notice them. Some of the key prediabetes symptoms are unusual thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, extreme fatigue, frequent infections, cuts/bruises that are slow healing, tingling/numbness in hands/feet or recurring skin, gum or bladder infections. Whether you have any of these symptoms or not, prediabetics are thought to be at higher risk for long-term damage to both the heart and circulatory system than are other adults.

Study: Curry Compound Might Cut Risk Of Diabetes Continued...

The good news on prediabetes is that you can do something to get yourself healthier... to hold off full blown diabetes, and it's often devastating consequences, but you must act right away... today. Change what you're eating and get a lot more active (just 30 minutes a day of moderately intense exercise) than you are right now. These two changes will help you lose weight, and are often enough to bring your blood glucose levels back to where they should be. The normal range for blood sugar is 100 mg/dL to no more than 126 mg/dL,

Other experts on diabetes, not involved in the Thai research, caution that it's still too early for prediabetics to be stocking up on supplements of any kind just yet. This latest research wasn't nearly long enough or large enough, and consumers must beware of supplements as many don't contain the ingredients (or the amount of an ingredient) shown on the label.

The best suggestion from most experts in terms of preventing diabetes is to eat healthy and address overall lifestyle issues, and not look to a wonder supplement, today or any day, to solve your health problems.

To your good health,
