Yoga: Decreases Inflammation And Reduces Stress

Dear Reader,

Encouraging news for caregivers to family members with serious illness. Some new work from the University of California, Los Angeles has shown that the practice of yoga can bring down stress and cut inflammation in as little of 12 minutes of practice each day for 8 weeks. Even by lazy standards, that's not a lot of time to invest, but what you get back is of tremendous value. The study appears in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology and supports work at UCLA from six months earlier that found practicing a particular form of yoga cut the stress levels of caregivers.

Often working without notice or credit, caregivers for family members with serious diseases experience some significant life stress of their own. Today at least 5 million Americans are supplying loving, daily care for a family member with dementia - factor in other serious medical conditions impacting an aging population and the true number of caregivers is likely far higher. This population routinely reports higher stress levels, more depression and less satisfaction and enjoyment of life, which is not surprising. The rate of heart disease, other disease and death risk are far higher in caregivers than in the rest of us. Thanks to this latest work we now know that caregivers are also burdened with higher levels of biological markers of inflammation than others.

The current study, led by UCLA geriatric psychiatrist Dr. Helen Lavretsky, included 45 caregivers of a family member diagnosed with dementia who were broken into two groups. One did a 12 minute long yoga practice at the same time every day for an 8-week period. The other was told to relax in a quiet area with eyes closed and listen to soothing music for 12 minutes each day, also for 8 weeks. Blood samples were taken at the start and at the end of the eight-week study period.

The yoga used in the study is known as Kirtan Kriya meditation. It involves both meditation and chanting and has its foundations in the Kundalini form of yoga. It's easy to learn, can be done anywhere and can certainly do no harm. If you can do only one type of medication, yoga enthusiasts agree that this is the one to do. It is helpful for breaking bad habits, finding balance in emotions and staying focused.

The UCLA team found that those who did this form of yoga experienced changes in the response of a total of 68 genes and a reduced level of inflammation. This slows processes that bring on disease. This latest work brings us closer to understanding the biological mechanisms responsible for the immune system's inflammation reaction and how they can be impacted by yoga.
