An Apple A Day May Keep Cholesterol In Check

Dear Reader,

Here's another reason to get your daily serving of fruit. A new study appearing in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics finds that women who eat dried apples once a day for at least a year show a decrease in cholesterol levels. Compare this to women who ate prunes each day during that same year who kept their cholesterol at the same level. Could a daily intake of these fruits keep cholesterol numbers from going up?

Both types of fruit are able to keep cholesterol under control according to study lead Bahram Arjmandi, the chair of Florida State University's department of Nutrition, Food, and Exercise Sciences. Until now, there hasn't been much research into the oft-repeated wisdom of an apple a day keeping you healthy. This study was a clear experiment in people to see if eating fruits can affect the risk factors for heart disease. One of these is, of course, cholesterol levels.

About 75% of our cholesterol is produced naturally by the body (so it can be effected by family history) and the rest comes from what we eat every day. The types that get the most attention are the good, HDL, that appears to help protect against heart attack and the bad, LDL, that can slowly build up on the walls of the arteries that feed both your heart and brain.

The year long research into fruit intake and cholesterol levels involved asking 45 female subjects to eat dried apples in an amount equal to about 2 apples. Another group ate 100 grams of dried plums each day. At the three, six and 12 month point, the subjects gave a blood sample so their cholesterol could be measured. Of note, there was no control group used, so the fruit eaters couldn't be compared to those who weren't eating this way.

All the subjects had already gone through menopause, a time that is thought to be tied to higher cholesterol levels. What's more, the cholesterol levels of the research subjects was below 200 milligrams per deciliter of blood level, the threshold where increased risk of heart attack and stroke appears.

An Apple A Day May Keep Cholesterol In Check Continued...

At three months, the prune eaters saw no difference in cholesterol. The numbers remained steady until the 12-month point. For the dried apple eaters, total cholesterol went down by 9%, and LDL (bad) cholesterol decreased by 16%. At the 6 month mark the apple eaters had their total cholesterol drop even more - to 13% lower than what it was at the start of the research. LDL cholesterol levels were down by 24%. By the year point, the cholesterol numbers stayed down.

You should know that the subjects who ate dried apples ended up with cholesterol reductions that weren't different than those who ate the prunes. So both fruits appear to do something to cholesterol levels in some people, though the action of dried apples on bad cholesterol was particularly powerful.

Doctors are aware that while cholesterol lowering medications (known as statins) can bring a considerable reduction in cholesterol, such medications are costly and have some side effects. Fruit, by contrast, is all natural and free of side effects and is part of a healthy, balanced diet - just 1.5 to 2.5 cups/day is enough to make a difference. Many health experts recommend abiding by this recommendation, assuring us that eating our fruits (and veggies) each day can protect us from dangers like stroke, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and even some cancers.

To your good health,
