Study: 30 Minute Workout Best For Weight Loss

Dear Reader,

When it comes to exercise and weight loss... less may actually be more. It's true. A small new study out of the University of Copenhagen finds that 30 minutes of exercise a day achieves the same amount of weight loss as a full hour exercise session. The surprising results appear in in the American Journal of Physiology.

Weight loss has always been tied to exercise, and with two thirds of US adults are considered overweight or obese, being active is a message that's just not getting through.

What troubles health experts is that the prevalence of being overweight among both men and women, in all age groups, among all races and ethnic groups, at all levels of education and without regard to smoking status is going up. And things aren't likely to change anytime soon - only 31% of U.S. adults report doing any regular leisure time activity.

The Danish research on exercise and weight was conducted for 13 weeks and included 60 healthy but heavier, Danish men who did either 30 or 60 minutes of exercise while wearing a calorie counter and heart rate monitor. The exercise sessions were meant to bring the exercisers to a light sweat and the subjects were instructed to bring up the intensity and push things harder on three days each week. Experts agree that a workout intense enough to produce a sweat is helpful in lowering those unhealthy body mass index (BMI) numbers.

The subjects were motivated to make a lifestyle change, and during the study were followed by researchers who looked at energy balance, insulin resistance and blood levels of hormones. Very few subjects dropped out, and those who worked out 30 minutes a day lost an average of almost 8 pounds over 3 months. Those who did the hour-long workout lost an average of 6 pounds. The loss of body mass for both groups was the same.

Study: 30 Minute Workout Best For Weight Loss Continued...

The team saw that subjects exercising 30 minutes a day burned more calories than would be expected because of the training program. This may be the reason why working out 60 minutes per day didn't provide any added loss in body fat, or a big lift in terms of weight. The men working out the longest didn't lose enough weight compared to the energy they were burning.

It appears 30 minutes of concentrated exercise gives just as good results according to Mads Rosenkilde, a biomedical sciences doctoral student at the University of Copenhagen. As to why this is... it may be that the 30-minute exercisers were inspired by their workout to be more active all day long. They had more energy to be active and did more. Or it could be that the 60-minute exercisers were doing so much physical work that they also ate more, and this impacted how much weight they lost.

What makes this study unique is that it used a population not often studied - moderately overweight men.

Moving forward, the researchers want to study other forms of exercise for different amounts of time. The important thing to take from the current research is that being active is good for weight loss - you will lose if you workout at least 30 minutes fairly regualry at an intensity that brings a light sweat.

To your good health,
