You're More Likely To Live Healthier With A Positive Outlook
Dear Reader,
Just look at the power of a "can do" attitude. When it comes to living healthy, personality and attitude appear to come into play and lead to healthier choices according to some new work from Australian researchers. Those who believe they are in control of their own fate are more likely to eat healthier, exercise more often and not smoke or drink to excess. Not surprisingly, the opposite is also true - those who believe their destiny is up to fate or all about luck aren't likely to make healthy choices.
The team, led by Deborah Cobb-Clark, the director of the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, used information that came from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Study, HILDA for short, that examined the diet exercise and personality types of over 7,000 subjects. The work appears in the Melbourne Institute Working Paper Series.
The study found a direct link between personality type and a healthy lifestyle.
The findings could certainly help shape public health policies to address our nation's growing weight problem. While the main policy response to the obesity epidemic has been to offer information, clearly this isn't enough to change eating habits, especially well entrenched ones. To make meaningful changes you need to understand the psychological factors involved in eating patterns and exercise habits, and address these first.
Men and women also have different views on the benefits of living healthy. Men look for physical results, women are more in tune with the daily pleasure they get from living this way. So what works for women, won't work for men.
Positive feelings and an upbeat outlook can not only impact how you feel today, but also your future health as well. It's important to pay just as much attention to our moods and attitudes as we do to staying physically healthy. It's not that happiness and a positive outlook are a magic bullet, but such an outlook does change you odds of getting a devastating disease or losing your life to it.

Here are some things to do to help lift your mood:
- Get a pet for the companionship and someone to welcome you home. Pets are there to lend a listening ear when you need one, they don't judge, condemn or talk back.
- Sing or listen to music - soothing, melodic music eases stress and offers comfort. Upbeat tunes get your toes tapping and help give you energy. Music activates specific regions in the brain that are involved in emotions and memory.
- Enjoy a good belly laugh every day by watching your favorite funny movie or TV program as laughter prompts physical changes that help both the immune and endocrine systems. Laughter releases chemicals that let blood vessels open, the opposite to what stress does.
- Get back to nature and head for the great outdoors to improve your mood and feelings of self-esteem. Those who do things outside are less angry, depressed and tense than those who don't go outdoors. After all, we evolved as a part of nature and this continues, like it or not, to be a big part of our health and well-being.
- Help others as volunteers who give time to community organizations or help friends, family or neighbors say they are happier and enjoy better health than those who don't do these things.
- Try activities like Tai Chi as the gentle movements reduce anxiety and depression, help improve the quality of your sleep, lower your blood pressure and ease chronic pain. Low impact, slow motion exercise help you focus on breathing and your body. The workout, and the support of the group are both incredibly beneficial to how you feel.
To your good health,
