Scientists Warn Diets High In Fructose Might Hurt Liver In Some
Dear Reader,
A warning to take to heart. Obese people who have diabetes and also eat a lot of fructose could also have high levels of uric acid that can cause a drop in energy stores in the liver according to research from Duke University Medical Center. The team wants the public to know about the risks that come with a high intake of fructose especially in some people.
Doctors know that high uric acid, called hyperuricemia, brings lower levels of liver adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a compound that's part of transferring energy between cells. Energy depletion in the liver can bring on liver damage for those who have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, NAFLD, or are at risk for it. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the accumulation of fat in the liver of those who don't drink, or drink little alcohol. It causes no signs or symptoms, but the fat that accumulates can bring on dangerous inflammation and scarring in the liver itself.
The liver is one of the most essential organs in the body. It processes what you eat and drink and turns it into energy. It also removes harmful things from your blood. And while some fat in the liver is normal, if more than 5 to 10% of the liver is fat, this can signal a problem.
With higher rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes and NAFLD in the United States, and the rise in fructose consumption the researchers feel strongly that experts need to understand the impact of a high fructose diet on both liver function and disease. You should know that NAFLD tends to develop in those who are overweight (or obese) and have either diabetes, high cholesterol or high triglycerides.
Fructose is a simple sugar that is a natural part of fruits, veggies and honey and provides fuel for the body. Combined with glucose it becomes the high fructose corn syrup you've heard so much about, that's a part of many packaged foods and drinks. In the 1800s and early 1900s most Americans took in about 15 grams of fructose mostly from foods; today we average 55 grams a day, up to 73 grams a day for teens. The increase in intake suspiciously parallels the rises in obesity, diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease that today affects almost a third of Americans.

Scientists Warn Diets High In Fructose Might Hurt Liver In Some Continued...
The team of researchers who conducted this study worked with just about 250 obese and diabetic subjects who were taking part in the Look AHEAD Study. Each subject was asked to try and estimate how much fructose they took in regularly. Liver ATP and uric acid levels were measured in another 100 subjects who took part in a second project; assessing the difference in liver ATP between those who had low fructose consumption (under 15 grams/day) and those who had higher consumption (over 15 grams/day) levels.
Those with higher dietary fructose intakes had lower liver ATP levels when the study started, and a bigger change in ATP after the fructose test. Those with higher uric acid levels had lower ATP stores after their high fructose intakes. Based on this, the team suggest uric acid that comes as part of the breakdown of natural food substances called purines, may be a marker for higher fructose consumption and lower levels of liver ATP.
More research in this area is needed.
To your good health,
