Cut High Blood Pressure Risk Eating Low-Fat Yogurt
Dear Reader,
If you haven't given low-fat yogurt a try... the findings of a new study presented as part of the American Heart Association's High Blood Pressure Research 2012 Scientific Sessions might give you a good reason. The work has shown that subjects who ate more low-fat yogurt had a 31% decrease in risk of developing troublesome high blood pressure compared to those who didn't eat as much of this type of yogurt.
What's more, over the course of the 15 years of the study, low-fat yogurt eaters had lower increase in systolic (the top number) blood pressure compared to those who didn't eat this yogurt. The results held even after adjusting for lifestyle factors, use of blood pressure medicines and weight.
Of note, the study was funded in part by yogurt giant Dannon, and was part of the larger, more long term Framingham Heart Study. Low fat yogurt is a natural source of protein and vital nutrients like calcium (a whopping 414 milligrams per 1-cup), potassium and magnesium - all associated with blood pressure, all typically underrepresented in the average American diet.
Of course there could be many other reasons why those who enjoy low-fat yogurt do better in terms of blood pressure. They may also engage in other healthy behaviors that were not considered as part of the study. Still, there are nutrition experts who believe that these research findings add to a growing body of evidence that points out the health benefits of this type of yogurt. Earlier work has shown that adding low fat dairy foods to an overall healthy diet can help manage blood pressure. The DASH studies published over ten years ago also found that three servings of low fat dairy, along with other healthy eating habits, was effective in bringing down those blood pressure numbers.
Not only that, because low-fat yogurt is such a good source of protein, you feel fuller longer after eating it.

Cut High Blood Pressure Risk Eating Low-Fat Yogurt Continued...
Estimates from the Centers for Disease Control And Prevention suggest that one in three U.S. adults (68 million Americans) have blood pressure readings that fall into the high blood pressure range. Though it has no no signs or symptoms, high blood pressure raises the risk for stroke and heart disease, both leading causes of death.
Every little thing you can do to keep your blood pressure in the normal, healthy range counts according to Dr. Robert. O. Bonow who is director of the Center for Cardiovascular Innovation at Northwestern's Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute but not part of the research. Bonow explains that as we age our blood pressure readings just naturally go up, so if you can do something to cut the age related increase we all deal with that can only be a good thing.
As to how much low-fat yogurt to eat... the study saw that six ounces of this type of yogurt every three days appeared to be enough. When you shop the many low-fat yogurt options in the market today, look for either low-fat or nonfat varieties and avoid artificial colors. Also, check the label for the amount of whey protein and the presence of live active cultures. You'll also want to check the expiration date on the package so you're only buying low-fat yogurt at its freshest.
To your good health,
