We Know A Bit More About Why BPA Is So Dangerous

Dear Reader,

If you've been keeping up on the news you've probably heard that BPA (bisphenol A) is a rather controversial chemical. It's found in many commercial products and yet has also been associated with reproductive issues, brain impairment, cancer, obesity and maybe even more. Experts now think they've found an explanation for how this substance is able to cause all kinds of trouble for our health.

The new work builds on research conducted in 2004 by Shin'ichi Yoshihara and a team out of Hiroshima International University in Japan. The Japanese were the ones to uncover the production of MBP when BPA was metabolized. They saw that MPB bonded more strongly to estrogen receptors, but didn't go on to see why this happened. The San Diego team took up that challenge and created a 3D computer model of BPA.

As they went through this process, the researchers, led by Michael E. Baker who is a research professor from the University of California San Diego found that the metabolite (known as MBP) was more active than the BPA, causing even more damage to the body.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that BPA is in the urine of most Americans, so we know the exposure is fairly universal. Today the chemical is banned in baby bottles and sippy cups, and manufacturers are suspending the sales of BPA laden products. And still it can be found in all kinds of things - food packaging, eyeglasses and computer equipment. Eliminating BPA probably isn't possible.

Health-wise, we know that BPA is able to mimic estrogen and attach itself to estrogen receptors throughout the body. This causes a change in natural estrogen levels, a process that could be the reason behind so many health problems. When working with the new computer model, Baker and the team saw that metabolite MBP was longer and able to attach to both ends of an estrogen receptor, while BPA itself is shorter and can only attach to a single end of the receptor. The MBP is grabbing onto the estrogen receptor with two hands and thus makes a much stronger connection.

The BPA metabolite in question may be just one of several.

The discovery appears online in the journal PLOS ONE. The hope is that the findings help experts develop new drugs to get in the way of the excess estrogen activity that's linked to diseases such as some forms of breast cancer. Baker hopes that a chemist could find a way to have the metabolite bind to the receptor but not be active.

We Know A Bit More About Why BPA Is So Dangerous Continued...

The US Food and Drug Administration is continuing to evaluate the evidence on health risks of low-dose exposure to BPA. It has said that trace BPA contamination that's in food and drinks is safe for people.

If you're concerned about your exposure to BPA, here are some things you might do. Rinse food that comes from cans before cooking or eating. Use ceramic, glass or another microwave friendly dish in place of plastic. Wash plastic containers in the dishwasher or by hand. Get rid of plastic containers that have scratches or obvious signs of wear. Stay informed on the issue and don't be afraid to ask questions or do your own investigating.

To your good health,
