The Battle Plan To Fight Obesity In Inner City Neighborhoods

Cutting the obesity rate in the U.S. is one of our top public health goals according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Almost a third of Americans are considered obese, with BMIs over 30.0, and a report just released by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation suggests as many as half of Americans in all but a few states will fall into the obese category in just 20 years. What's worse, the rates of obesity are already way too high in too many ethnic, inner city neighborhoods.
Which is what drew UCLA public health researchers to looking for ways to increase physical activity in those inner city minority neighborhoods. They saw that younger African-Americans liked to hip-hop, Latinos enjoyed salsa dancing. In Appalachian areas footwork known as "talking dance" got some up and moving around. The experts looked for ways to combine these popular activities into a program that anyone could enjoy.
Encouraging healthy living by respecting an area's preferences, cultures and leaders earned UCLA Fielding School of Public Health a $20 million grant from the federal government to implement a national anti-obesity campaign in city areas all across the nation. It's the largest grant the school's ever gotten, and will draw on 20 years of research on ways to curb obesity in minority areas through both being more active and eating more nutritious foods. It's clear to many that the government believes that this research-backed approach is ready to go live.
The five-year project is a partnership with many community-based groups that hopes to reach millions of Americans who live in inner city areas. The leaders of each community will be responsible for applying the program that comes with a tool kit (CDs and DVDs featuring short dance and sports themed exercises with people from the community) of materials as well as funds to hire staff. The activities can take place in schools, clubs, churches, clinics and work areas and the leaders have added their own opinions about what music and movements would get people up and moving.
It's been shown that promoting fitness is more effective if you make it work with the culture according to Roshan Bastani, the co-leader of the project and a professor of health policy and management at the Fielding School, as well as a co-director of the UCLA Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Equity. So the stars of the videos make suggestions as to content that works and are provided with the parameters on what muscles to use and how to make sure the moves are safe.

Researchers, including Bastani's co-project leader, Dr. Antronette Yancey have spent years studying obesity in minority communities. Her work supports the idea of focusing on groups instead of individuals and targeting "captive" audients, two other keys to the program. So information on nutrition and being active will be in places where people gather, senior centers or work areas. It's not realistic to expect one person to engage in exercise and eating healthy all alone... on their own. Instead this program means you'd have to work hard to not use healthy options. Organizations and clubs that adopt the program would only offer healthy choices for food and drinks at meetings or receptions. For gatherings longer than 90 minutes, a 10-minute activity break would be scheduled. The CD/DVD Instant Recess segments are just that length - 10 minutes long.
Yancey and her team have found that people like group exercise breaks. Organizations and businesses are starting to see that if you let people get together and move about a bit it relieves stress. It helps you concentrate and shows those who aren't active that it's not too hard to be active.
The UCLA team feels that the workplace might be the most natural fit for this program. We spend lots of our time here... and it offers a ready opportunity to encourage healthy nutrition and being active.
