Junk Food And Stroke Risk: The Latest Findings

Dear Reader,

More reason to limit how much junk food you're eating. A recent study in rats finds that those who eat our Western diet - a diet that's loaded with fat, sugar and salt - are at a much higher risk of both devastating stroke and early death. The researchers from Canada contend that our typical way of eating, dubbed affectionately "the cafeteria diet", acts like a ticking time bomb of potential health problems.

Junk foods have lots of calories but not much nutritional value... French fries, milkshakes, chips, and the like. The trouble with junk food is that people tend not to feel as satisfied after they've eaten, which causes us to eat more than we should. Junk foods often also take the place of other, more nutritious options - drink lots of soda and you aren't leaving room for low fat dairy or other good-for-you drinks.

To conduct the work, the Canadian researchers gave a group of sedentary rats a choice of nutritional food pellets or junk foods like cookies, cupcakes and sausage. To drink, the animals had water or a 30% sugar solution that was intended to imitate soft drinks and other such sweetened beverages. Just like people, the rats preferred the junk foods, and after eating a high calorie, high sugar and high salt diet for two months, they started to develop symptoms of the condition known as metabolic syndrome. This includes things like high blood pressure, high cholesterol numbers, high blood sugar levels and obesity which all up the risk of stroke and other dangerous health problems. The rats were the equal of 16 to 22 years old in human years.

The worry of the experts is that we will soon see people in their 30s or 40s who are having strokes, dealing with dementia because of the way they eat, according to study lead Dr. Dale Corbett who is the scientific director of the Center for Stroke Recovery at Canada's Heart and Stroke Foundation. These major health problems, once only a concern in older people, are now more likely to be a problem in the young.

Regular exercise and a healthy diet have never been more critical.

Experts aren't even sure that metabolic syndrome can be reversed once you have it. If not, then there are many people walking around like ticking time bombs of potential health problems. Metabolic syndrome and stroke are such massive health concerns; everyone needs to know the risks, so they can make informed choices about better nutrition and exercise. What we're eating is killing us.

If you'd like to cut your intake of junk foods, here are some smart tips...

- Go to fast food places that offer healthier choices, or choose a place that's a bit higher quality and offers more nutritious meals. Avoid that all-you-can-eat buffet.

- Remove all the junk food from your kitchen, so you won't be tempted. Replace with healthier snacks, ready to eat.

- Look for products that are low in sugar, high fructose corn syrup, milled grains and partially hydrogenated oils.

- Start your day with a healthy breakfast to reduce hunger and supply energy that will take you to your next meal.

- Include lots of fresh fruits and veggies, healthy whole grains and low fat dairy on that shopping list. Stay out of the middle of the store, where the snacks are and never, ever shop when you're hungry.

- Limit TV watching for yourself and your kids.

- Let yourself indulge every so often, maybe once every 2 weeks.

Of course more study is needed to assess the risk of eating poorly on animals who have other health issues. Most of the time lab models use young, healthy animals who eat better than people do and this may be misrepresenting the risk.

The research on stroke risk and junk food intake was presented at the 2012 Canadian Stroke Congress.
