10 most annoying Sounds And Why They Bother You
Dear Reader,
You'll want to listen to this. Science may have uncovered the mechanisms that cause our reaction to certain unpleasant (dare we say annoying) sounds, nails on a chalkboard or bloodcurdling screams, for instance. Some new research appearing in the Journal of Neuroscience, finds that annoying sounds set off a highly emotional response inside the brain. It appears the area in the brain that plays a part in the processing of emotions, known as the amygdala, takes over the auditory part of the brain when we hear these types of sounds.
To study the effect of sounds on the brain, the team from the U.K.'s Newcastle University used functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI for short) to examine how the brains of 13 volunteers, all healthy, responded as they listened to 74 different sounds. From inside the scanner, the subjects rated the sounds from most annoying (a knife on a bottle) to most pleasing (baby laughing). This allowed the team to study the response of the brain to both pleasing and unpleasant sounds.
The work identified ten of the most unpleasant sounds, and It's a cringe worthy list.
- Knife on a bottle
- Fork on a glass
- Chalk on a blackboard
- Ruler on a bottle
- Nails on a blackboard
- Female scream
- Disc grinder
- Squealing brakes on a bicycle
- Baby crying
- Electric drill
Our reactions might come from something pretty primitive according to the author of the paper on the work, Sukhbinder Kumar from the Institute of Neuroscience at Newcastle University, such as a distress signal from the amygdala to the auditory cortex. Activity in this area varies depending on how unpleasant the sound is. An annoying sound brought increased activity in the amygdala, which took control of the hearing part of the brain. The spike in emotional activity served to heighten the subject's perception of annoying noises compared to pleasing ones.
Looking at the auditory characteristics of those unpleasant sounds, the team saw that anything in the higher frequency ranges (2,000 to 5,000 Hz) was rated more annoying by study subjects. This is the range where our ears are most sensitive, though why this might be is still being debated. Interesting that this is the level for screams, which we all find intensely unpleasant.

10 most annoying Sounds And Why They Bother You Continued...
Just for the record, and to clear out those unpleasant sounds from your head,
here are the four most pleasing sounds according to the research.
- Applause
- Baby laughing
- Thunder
- Water flowing
The team hopes that this work will help us understand how the brain reacts to
sounds, as well as be a starting point of study on conditions that affect our
perception of sound. Conditions like hyperacusis, misophonia and even autism
where sensitivity to noise is often present. The findings might also offer a
new direction in studying emotional disorders as well as conditions like tinnitus
and migraine, both of which feature a heightened perception of the unpleasant
parts of sounds.
Such an important area of research will surely merit more study in the future.
To your good health,
Kirsten Whittaker
