Lower Your Stroke Risk With Tomatoes, A Natural Source Of Lycopene

Dear Reader,

Worried about stroke risk? Now you have more reason than ever to follow a diet with lots of fruits and veggies. A new Finnish analysis appearing in the journal Neurology finds that men who eat lots of tomatoes or tomato-based products also enjoy a reduced risk of stroke. Tomatoes are known to be a rich source of lycopene, a beneficial antioxidant that gives these foods their deep color. Men who took part in this study and had the highest levels of lycopene in their bloodstreams had a 55% lower risk of stroke compared to those who had the lowest levels of this substance in their blood.

Tomatoes, beyond being one of the most concentrated food sources of lycopene, also bring you vitamin C, folate and potassium.

The current research looked at lycopene levels in blood, not at how many tomatoes the subjects ate. The research included just over 1,000 males ages 46 to 65 years old living in Finland. The levels of lycopene and other antioxidants in the blood were measured when the study started and the subjects were then followed for almost 12 years. During that time 67 of them had a stroke. The strokes were more common among older subjects and those who had diabetes.

The thing is, even after controlling for these and other factors, the subjects with the highest lycopene levels were 55% less apt to suffer a stroke than those with the lowest levels. There was no link between stroke risk and the blood levels of the other antioxidants, alpha carotene, beta carotene, alpha tocopherol and retinol, studied. The team saw that the lowered risk was highest for the type of strokes caused by blood clots of the brain that are known to medicine as ischemic strokes.

According to the research, cooked tomatoes appear to have a bigger impact on blood levels of lycopene than raw tomatoes or tomato in juice form. Other sources of lycopene include apricots, watermelon, guava, papaya and pink grapefruit. Also interesting that smokers tended to have lower levels of lycopene in their blood. Lead study author Jouni Karppi, a researcher at the University of Eastern Finland, believes the findings make a stronger case than ever for eating right to prevent strokes.

If only people would eat the recommended five servings of fruits and veggies each day as we might see huge reductions in the number of strokes suffered the world over. Other work has shown that high lycopene e levels might be associated with a lower risk of some types of cancers including cancers of the prostate, lung and stomach. It's safe to say that eating more fruits and veggies to cut your risk of stroke is a smart strategy.

Lower Your Stroke Risk With Tomatoes, A Natural Source Of Lycopene Continued...

When it comes to stroke risk, getting plenty of fruits and veggies, along with other nutritious foods is only part of the story. Regular exercise is also a critical step of prevention of such a devastating event. Experts are quick to point out that lifestyle changes are more effective than any medication you can take.

Some of things you can to help prevent a stroke:

- Keep high blood pressure under control.

- Work to bring high cholesterol numbers under control.

- Don't smoke, and if you do, quit or cut down.

- Mange your diabetes so you minimize the danger of complications from the disease.

It appears the benefits of lycopene in terms of stroke risk only apply to whole foods, not to supplements. And while the study included only men, it's likely that the findings apply to women as well. So now you truly have no reason not to eat healthy if you're worried about stroke risk, or just want to be as healthy as you can be.

To your good health,
