Raise Good Cholesterol With Diet, Exercise

Dear Reader,

It's never too late to make positive changes. If you're overweight and have diabetes, doing intense exercise and watching what you eat can not only help you lose weight, it might also train your own fat cells to produce a hormone that boosts the production of good cholesterol - so says a new study from a team at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas.

As you've probably heard, "good" cholesterol, or HDL, has been associated with positive effects on heart health, circulating in the bloodstream and naturally scouring the blood vessel walls to capture bad cholesterol and take it to the liver for processing. The HDL level a person has tells us how vigorously the blood vessels are being cleaned naturally by the body. High levels of this type of cholesterol mean a lower risk for heart disease, while low levels rise your risk. A HDL number over 60 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) is considered good, numbers between 60 and 40 are normal, while any number under 40 isn't so good.

The team drew participants from the Look AHEAD trial that included subjects who were overweight or obese and had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Study participants were randomly assigned to a lifestyle intervention group that involved an intensive diet and exercise program; or a control program that offered diabetes support and education but encouraged no lifestyle changes. The subjects also had blood drawn at regular intervals, were weighed and underwent a fitness test.

After a year, as you might expect, the lifestyle intervention group had significantly improved in a measure of their total body fat known as adiposity, as well as being more fit, having better blood sugar and blood fat levels. While "bad" (LDL) cholesterol didn't change, levels of the hormone adiponectin and HDL both increased. Science knows that adiponectin plays a part in both fat burning and storage of sugar. Levels of this hormone went up almost 12%, while HDL cholesterol increased just about 10% in the lifestyle intervention group.

Raise Good Cholesterol With Diet, Exercise Continued...

This latest research appears to suggest that this hormone prompts the liver to produce more HDL cholesterol. The good news is that even those who are overweight and dealing with a chronic illness can see a positive change by being more physically active and eating a healthier diet claims principal investigator Dr. Christie Ballantyne, director of the Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention which is a part of the Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center at The Methodist Hospital. It's never too late to get started.

The research on cholesterol and lifestyle interventions will appear online in an upcoming print issue of the Journal of Lipid Research. If you're worried about your own health, you should (with your doctor's permission of course) do as the lifestyle intervention group did - exercise that gets your heart rate up for 20 to 30 minutes at a time on most days of the week, while also eating a healthy, balanced diet that includes lots of natural, unprocessed foods from all different food groups are both tremendously helpful in terms of cholesterol and keeping your heart healthy.

To your good health,
