Key To Living Longer
Dear Reader,
New research on aging confirms what many people may have long suspected. Those who find joy in life are more than three times more likely to live a bit longer than those who say they enjoy life the least. The University College London researchers came to the conclusion after examining 10,000 English subjects and suggest that future disability or poor health can be predicted by state of mind, an effect independent of age, sex or how much money a subject had.
The team tracked the well-being of the study subjects, aged 50 to 100, for a nine-year period as part of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Participants were interviewed three times and assessed using three measures of psychological well-being. Testing the participants' enjoyment of life came as the result of a series of questions.
The researchers saw that those who had been identified as having the greatest enjoyment of life at that first interview were more likely to still be living nine or ten years later. The differences between those who enjoyed life the most, and those who enjoyed it the least were striking, nearly three times more people died in the lower enjoyment group than in the group who found more joy in life. Of those with most enjoyment, 9.9% died, for those with the least enjoyment, 28.8% died.
It may be that those who have a more upbeat outlook tend to take care of themselves; eating right, being active and getting rest and necessary medical care. While those who are less happy see no need to do these things. Happier people may also be less stressed, and are certainly less isolated (by choice or due to behavior) than those who are not as full of joy for life.
But having a positive attitude isn't something you can get out of book or from a self help video. It's a lifestyle choice that calls for attention and consistent effort.
Some things you might try to be more upbeat at any age.
- Focus on what you can do, what you can achieve, and act on this.
- Live in the moment, stop, use your senses to take in, and appreciate, the environment
around you.
- Surround yourself with positive people and limit your exposure to those who
are negative or hold you back.
- As hard as it is, let go of feelings of anger, resentment or judgment as they
will sap your energy and keep you from moving forward.
- Don't look too far into the future, or worry overmuch about what "might" come.

Key To Living Longer Continued...
- Assume that everyone you come in contact with is a good person, by treating
them as such they will respond by acting that way in response.
-
Exercise regularly - daily if possible - as this helps with stress and keeps
you fit too.
-
Try not to let the minor (but fully expected) annoyances of life get under your
skin - just don't sweat this stuff; it's not worth it.
-
Smile.
-
Find an engaging, pleasing hobby that you enjoy.
- Be grateful for what you have, who you are and the people in your life.
In future, could happiness, or lack of it, be used to spot those at risk of ill
health? And intervene in time to prevent such outcomes? Only time will tell but
it is an intriguing area of study to be sure.
To your good health,
