This Lowers Cancer Risk

Dear Reader,

More news on preventing cancer. Older women who drink green tea regularly may have a bit lower risk of colon, throat and stomach cancers than women who don't drink this beverage according to a large study appearing in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The finding comes from following over 69,000 Chinese women for ten years. Those who drank the green tea at least three times each week were 14% less likely to get a cancer of the digestive system - meaning lower odds of stomach, colon and esophageal cancers.

Green tea has been cultivated for hundreds of years and contains some rather powerful antioxidants, a compound known as EGCG among them, that might help hold off the damage to body cells that leads to chronic diseases or cancers. Green tea is made from unfermented leaves so you naturally get the highest concentrations of antioxidants. Green tea does have small amounts of vitamin K, so if you take medications to prevent blood clotting, you should talk to your doctor before you start drinking it regularly. Regular intake of green tea has not been found to be troublesome, though the tea and its extracts do have caffeine and some people need to avoid too much of this substance.

To conduct the research, data was used form a long running health study of middle aged and older women from China. Over 19,000 were classified as regular green tea drinkers, having the drink at least three times each week. The subjects didn't smoke or drink alcohol regularly and supplied information on what they ate, how much they exercised as well as their current weight and medical history.

Over the 11 year study, 1,255 women were diagnosed with a cancer of the digestive system, and the risks of these cancers was somewhat lower when the subject drank green tea a lot, and for a long while. For instance, women who said they'd regularly drunk green tea for at least 20 years were 27% less likely than non-drinkers to have any digestive cancer. They were 29% less likely to be diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

Green tea drinkers were also younger, consumed more fruits and veggies, exercised more often and had jobs that paid more money. The researchers adjusted for all these factors, though it isn't possible to account for everything that might affect the risk of such a complex disease.

This Lowers Cancer Risk Continued...

This is not to say that you should be drinking green tea to hold off cancer. No one can be sure that the green tea is the reason, but drinkers of this beverages are often more aware of health than the rest of us. The study tried to account for this according to senior researcher Dr. Wei Zheng who is head of epidemiology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

Past work has brought conflicting findings on if green tea drinkers do have better odds in terms of cancer risk. The trouble with all this research is that it's hard to isolate the effect of a single food or drink that a subject might consume on the risk of a disease like cancer. Clinical trials, where subjects are randomly assigned to drink green tea or a placebo beverage, would be the type of research needed.

The National Cancer Institute points out that even these types of trials, when they've been done, have brought inconsistent results in terms of green tea and cancer prevention. There's strong evidence from work in the lab that green tea has a potential to fight cancer. But there is more robust evidence that other factors can influence cancer risk. If you're truly concerned, evaluate your own health picture and habits. Only you can decide if your risk (or concern) warrants a change in what you drink, eat or do.

To your good health,
