What You Should Know About Breast Cancer

Dear Reader,

Here's the latest on breast cancer. With the conflicting recommendations over the age to start mammograms still very much out there. The concern for women is that statistics suggest one in eight females getting this dangerous, disfiguring disease in our lifetime. Maybe you even know someone who's had it... or you're a patient yourself. But how much should the average healthy woman worry about her risk? And do we know what to do to protect ourselves?

To get the answers Health magazine, along with an assist from ACOG, conducted a survey on breast cancer of 1,248 OB-GYNs and 753 readers. The results are jarring; even smart women have dangerous misconceptions about this disease.

- 63% of women think family history is the biggest risk factor. It isn't. Most women who have breast cancer have no family history... no mother or sister with the disease. The truth is, your increasing age is your biggest breast cancer risk according to Dr. Susan Boolbol, who is chief of breast surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center. As our tissue gets older, the risk of getting a disease naturally goes up as well. Age also gives you longer exposure to estrogen that could be involved in breast cancer risk. Risk goes from 10 in 233 in your 30s to 1 in 29 by the time you're in your 60s.

- 40% of women worry about breast cancer of all the cancers. The good news is that when caught early, breast cancer is very treatable. Also, there's this - while breast cancer might be more common, lung cancer kills more women each year. The lifetime risk of dying from breast cancer is 1 in 36, while lung cancer is 1 in 20. Breast cancer tends to be caught earlier because of screenings like mammograms, while other cancers like ovarian are more silent and typically caught at a later stage. What's more, breast cancer gets lots of media attention, so it's no surprise it would be top of mind.

What You Should Know About Breast Cancer Continued...

- 39% of women think that the best way to catch breast cancer is by doing a monthly breast self exam, considering this to be more critical to detection than mammograms. Yet according to 73% of physicians, mammograms are key to catching breast cancers at their earliest. Most recommendations are for women to start getting mammograms at 40 and repeat them every year or two afterwards. If you're under 50, digital mammograms are better able to see cancers in dense breast tissue.

- Only 4% of women say breast cancer risk is most affected by weight and it is true that being heavier ups your risk by as much as 40%. Studies have found women who gained 20-30 pounds after 18 had a bigger risk of postmenopausal cancer of the breast than those who gained just 5 pounds. Weight gain is a large enough risk that 78% of doctors asked say they tell patients to lose weight to reduce breast cancer risk.

If you have risk factors for breast cancer, you need to be proactive. Family members who have been diagnosed with ovarian, prostate or pancreatic cancers are details to share with your own doctor. Ask about getting screened earlier than the norm and investigate genetic testing or any preventive medications available to you. Read research and stay informed.

To your good health,
