Help Your Brain Processes

Dear Reader,

Here's a twist on the usual bad tidings about caffeine - a new study from German researchers that appears in PLoS ONE finds that a little caffeine helps our brain recognize words that have a positive association faster and more accurately. The same could not be said for neutral or negative words, nor did the study provide proof of a cause and effect type relationship. Still, how often do you hear something good about caffeine?

Caffeine is a natural part of some leaves, beans and fruits, but can also be made synthetically and added to all sorts of things. You've probably heard caffeine referred to as the worlds most routinely used psychoactive drug with almost 90% of adults taking in this substance each day. Once ingested, caffeine is absorbed within the next 30 to 45 minutes, the effects fading away within three hours.

This latest study on caffeine and word processing in the brain involved 66 healthy subjects who were from 19 to 32 years old and randomly assigned to either a caffeine group or a placebo (lactose tablet) ingesting control group. All were healthy, had normal vision and no history of a neurologic or psychiatric condition. They took in normal amounts of caffeine... about 1.58 cups per day. None of the subjects had consumed any caffeine, nicotine or alcohol in the 12 hours before the experiment was conducted.

The subjects were given either the caffeine tablet or placebo a half hour before the session began. They were seated before a screen and shown a string of letters, one at a time, and had to decide, as quickly as they could, if the word was real or nonsense.

The research found that after taking in 200 milligrams of caffeine (the equal of two to three cups of coffee) a half hour before a task enhanced the recognition of positive words by the brain. The caffeine pill takers were able to make the decisions on the word more quickly, and were correct more often when it came to words that had a positive association.

Help Your Brain Processes Continued...

Earlier research on caffeine has found that the substance brings on more activity in the central nervous system. It also enhances the function of the brain when we're doing simple things. What makes this study different is that the team, led by Lars Kuchinke of Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany, looked at the link between caffeine and emotional biases. More work in this area will help answer the many questions scientists still have about the effect.

Both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the American Medical Association consider a moderate intake (200-300 mg a day) of caffeine safe for most of us. Estimates suggest that the average daily intake of caffeine for Americans is almost 280 mg/day, with 20% to 30% of us taking in more than 600 mg a day. Our top three sources of caffeine are coffee, soda and tea.

Interesting that despite what you might have heard (or been told) there's a lot of evidence emerging that caffeine might not be the big bad guy after all. Not only can a cup help you when your thinking feels a bit slow, but there are other positive findings coming to light as well. In the last year alone we've seen research that shows caffeine might help improve muscle strength for older people, delay the onset of devastating Alzheimer's disease and even lower the risk of skin cancer.

To your good health,
