Lower Heart Disease Risk Today

Dear Reader,

If you want to keep your health as you age, and who doesn't, here's some important news. You need to keep your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers in the healthy range while still in your middle years.

A large study appearing in the Journal of the American Medical Association finds the overall risk of getting any type of heart disease (heart disease, stroke or dying from either) in your lifetime was 60% for men; 55% for women. By having an optimal risk factor profile at the age of 45, subjects held off heart disease for almost 14 years compared to those who had at least two of the major risks for heart disease in middle age.

The researchers, led by John T. Wilkins, MD, of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, pooled information from five National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute funded studies that included 50,000 subjects, both men and women. All were free of cardiovascular disease at the start of the study. Two key findings from the study...

· Women had lower lifetime risks of disease than men at all ages.

· After a heart attack or stroke, men and women no matter what age, died within one to four years on average.

The study findings show plainly the value of living a healthy lifestyle. Eating a healthy, balanced diet, exercising regularly, keeping your body at an ideal weight, avoiding tobacco and addressing conditions like high blood pressure or high cholesterol are all so important. What you'll be aiming for is to reach that optimal level used in the study, have blood pressure that reads under 120 over 80, a total cholesterol number of 180 and be free of diabetes and not be a smoker.

Lower Heart Disease Risk Today Continued...

Today about one in three U.S. adults has high blood pressure, a condition without signs or symptoms that can damage your heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other systems of the body slowly and silently. Cholesterol is a waxy substance that's found in fats, also called lipids, in the blood. Although your body needs cholesterol to keep building healthy cells, too much can up your risk of dangerous heart disease.

It's important to understand there are no guarantees. Even if you're careful about all the risk factors at midlife you may still end up having heart disease later on. The research found that even if you have that "optimal" profile for risk factors, the lifetime risk of heart disease held at 30% or higher for both men and women. But so long as your risk factors are in hand your chances of living healthier, longer are far better.

Earlier studies in this area have shown that your health in midlife does influence your future risk of some types of heart disease. The more risk factors you have at this age, the bigger the risk of disease in your later years. What sets this new study apart is that it's the first to examine the risk of all types of heart disease, including heart attacks, other coronary heart disease, stroke, congestive heart failure and death because of any of these.

To your good health,
