5 Ways To Avoid Cold And Flu
Dear Reader,
Cold and flu season is near, officially running from October to May, but peaking during January and February. There's no telling how mild, or severe, this year's season will be according to epidemic intelligence officer Dr. Karen K. Wong of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, though we've learned a lot more on how to fight germs and create better targeted flu shots.
Here's how experts decide what to put in that shot. Each year, the CDC scientists consider which strains of influenza are likely, based on information from the previous season. They then put dead forms of these strains into the vaccine for that year. So when you get the short, your own immune systems starts producing targeted antibodies to those specific organisms. If you run into the live germ, your body will be primed to fight it off.
So... here's what you can do this season to keep from getting sick...
1. Get your flu shot as soon as you can.
The CDC suggests that all those over 6 months of age should be vaccinated for influenza as it can be a serious illness. The emphasis on timing comes from the way the flu vaccine works - it takes from two to four weeks to be fully protective.
The flu vaccine is thought to be at least 60% effective. If you do get the flu, your symptoms will be that much less severe because of the immunity you've built thanks to the shot. The only downside is that your arm might be a bit sore or red, but this is a natural response to the injected vaccine.
No matter what someone tells you... you cannot get the flu from the flu shot. The organisms injected are not alive. But if you're allergic to eggs, talk to your doctor before you do anything. Another vaccination options is FluMist, a needle free nasal spray that's a fine choice for those who aren't pregnant, over 60 of have a condition like asthma.
2. Stay away from sick people.
Colds and flu are passed when infected people cough, sneeze or even talk as virus filled water droplets from the mouth and nose are expelled out into the air, travelling from six to as many as ten feet away. So if someone around you shows up complaining about feeling under the weather... is coughing or sneezing, keep your distance. Ten to 15 feet is ideal.
If you're feeling sick... stay the heck home so you don't infect anyone else.
And while you can't catch real influenza from an object like an elevator button or keyboard, you might catch the more common cold. This virus is mostly passed by touch, which makes it a good idea to regularly clean shared phones and laptops with disinfecting wipes.
Of course if the patient is a spouse, parent or child, you can't banish them, but you can wash your hands more than usual. Don't kiss them or share drinks or utensils. Keep in mind that people can shed live viruses for up to five days after symptoms go away.
3. Wash your hands.
Just as mom told you, washing your hands regularly is a smart way to stay healthy. Soap up and vigorously lather your hands for a single chorus of "Happy Birthday" or use the many alcohol based hand sanitizers. Soap and water is always the preferred method of washing. Do this before you eat or touch your face, eyes or nose and after using the bathroom.

4. Get enough sleep.
We know that rest is key when you're feeling bad, but research has found that it also can make the difference between who gets sick and who stays well. A study from Carnegie Mellon University of those who got eight or more hours of sleep found they were less likely to develop a cold than those who slept under seven hours, even after a live virus was placed right in the nose.
Doing a bit of meditation could also be helpful in warding off cold and flu. A new study from the University of Wisconsin of those who had taken a mindfulness meditation course found they were about 30% less likely to get sick than those who didn't practice the technique. You don't need to take a class, just sit and focus on your breathing... inhaling slowly and exhaling slowly for a few minutes each day.
5. Eat to help your immunity.
What you put into your body can make a big difference in how well your body can fight off a cold or flu. Cut back on fatty foods and eat more antioxidant rich fruits and veggies - five to nine servings per day are what's recommended. If you can't manage that, at least try for a single serving of fruits or veggies with every meal or as snacks. Go especially for orange, yellow-orange and deep green.
Vitamin D is another good nutrient to add to your diet if you want to stay healthy. A recent Spanish study found that being deficient might leave people particularly vulnerable to either colds of flu. Go for supplements if you can't get enough from sunlight or what you're eating.
Remember, cold and flu season is not the time for a crash diet. Cutting calories can lower your body's defenses. Your best bet is to opt for a well balanced diet that isn't lacking in any nutrient with an occasional indulgence.
To your good health,
