More Flu Shot Facts

Dear Reader,

Flu shots are a vital part of preparing for the oncoming flu season. But no one likes to get them, and sometimes it's hard to find the time, the nerve, to get yourself in to the pharmacy or healthcare facility to actually do it. Here's some help. We've gathered the most often repeated myths about the flu vaccine (and the illness itself) and challenged them with medical facts so that we could de-bunk six more of the most popular myths.

Myth #1: If I haven't gotten a flu shot by Christmas, there's no point.

While it's best to get the flu vaccine before the season peaks in February and early March, it's still not too late to protect yourself. Full immunity comes in about two weeks, so you might be vulnerable at the start of the season, but you'll have immunity soon enough, certainly before season peak.

Myth #2: You can get the flu by getting a chill or going out in the cold.

Getting chilled to the point of hypothermia can leave your immune system weaker, but going out in the cold with wet hair or sitting in a draft is not what we mean. While severe chills can make you more likely to get sick, you really have to come in contact with the flu to get a genuine case. A chill isn't going to do that.

Myth #3: Taking vitamin C or Echinacea can prevent the flu.

Much as we might want to find other options, the data suggests large doses of vitamin C and Echinacea are not protecting us from influenza. While there's some evidence they might help with the symptoms of a cold, in terms of the flu they have no impact.

Myth #4: Taking antibiotics can fight the flu

Antibiotics are used to control infection, like pneumonia that is a complication of serious bouts of the flu; but these medications can't treat a viral illness like flu itself. There are antiviral drugs like Tamiflu and Relenza, but they only shorten the length of illness, not stop it altogether.

More Flu Shot Facts Continued...

Myth #5: You starve a fever... feed a cold...

There's no science that proves this old adage works one bit. You need both food and liquids to fight a cold or flu. The fluids are the most important, and it's usually best to keep foods simple and bland.

Myth #6: The flu is a natural illness, so just stay home and ride it out.

For most people who get the flu, staying home on the couch and getting rest and plenty of fluids is fine. But if your fever doesn't break or your symptoms get worse, you'll need medical attention. It doesn't matter how young you are... how you never (until now) get sick... the complications of flu are serious and need either medication or time in the hospital to resolve them. This is especially true if you start having a severe headache and stiffness in your neck - this is a sign of bacterial meningitis, not the flu.

This illness starts out with flu like symptoms (fever and achiness) and quickly progresses to a serious state. Bacterial meningitis can cause brain damage, coma and even death if not treated in time. When in doubt, a ride to the hospital can supply the answer, possibly saving a life.

To your good health,

Kirsten Whittaker
