Walk To A Longer Life
Dear Reader,
Exercise is surely the way to a longer, healthier life, and recently a new study was released that supports the idea that regular exercise can add years to your life. Researchers at the U.S. National Cancer Institute found that saying active after you turn 40 appears to up your lifespan from two to as many as seven years. And the more you workout, the longer you're expected to live - and get this - no matter what you weigh.
The research, appearing in a recent issue of PLoS Medicine pooled data from six studies that had already been published and included over 650,000 subjects. Using that information, the team was able to figure out the years of life gained after age 40 from different types of activity.
- Brisk walking, about 75 minutes/week added 1.8 years of life.
- Walk 150 to 299 minutes/week and gain 3.4 years in life expectancy. This is
the level of activity that's recommended by the U.S. government.
- Walking up to 450 minutes a week added 4.5 years of life.
What's more, the gains were seen in everyone, at any weight - normal, overweight or obese. The biggest gains in life expectancy, as you might expect, came to the normal weight subjects who exercises at the levels called for by the U.S. government when compared to an obese subject who didn't exercise.
The researchers call this a "dose response relationship" between exercise and how long you will live according to lead study author Steven Moore, a research fellow at the National Cancer Institute. Even if you're not doing anything physical right now, adding just a few minutes a day can bring a notable increase in how long you might expect to live.

Walk To A Longer Life Continued...
It may be that exercise prevents some of the fatal diseases that plague us. Other earlier research has linked regular physical activity with lower risk of heart disease and cancers of the colon and breast as well as of the endometrium, lung and prostate. Another key message that can be taken from the study is the importance of maintaining a healthy body weight, as the subjects who did, and were regularly active; saw the biggest benefits to lifespan.
The take home message. Some activity is good. More is better. And walking is a great exercise to try, especially for those who haven't been active in a while. Walking is low impact, a safe, gentle exercise that's easy to do and calls for no special equipment beyond a good, comfortable pair of shoes. Anyone, of any fitness level, can do it. And don't worry that you're not "feeling the burn"; a brisk walk done regularly reaps plenty of benefits.
Once you decide to start walking, be sure that you're allowing time for a warm up - 5 minutes at a slow, steady pace should be enough to have you feeling warm and ready to go. Then allow time for some stretching, and don't forget the cool down period when the walk is over, to reduce the stress on both your heart and muscles. Remember, walk only as far (or as fast) as you can, don't push, let today be a starting point that you can build upon.
To your good health,
