The Best Diabetes Prevention

Dear Reader,

Diabetes is a serious, life altering disease. One of the most troubling things about it is the most common form, type 2, is largely preventable. It doesn't have to happen. Doctors acknowledge that this dangerous condition is more likely in those who eat a poor, unhealthy diet and combine this with a sedentary lifestyle - both well within our control. What's more, diabetes also brings the very real risk of serious complications like blindness, heart and kidney disease, damage to nerves and even amputations, which is why doctors work so hard to keep it under control.

According to new figures from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, type 2 diabetes is now a fact of life for citizens of all ages and in all 50 states. Eighteen states had a doubling of diabetes diagnosis during the years 1995 to 2010; 42 states reported a rate jump of 50% according to the report. Many patients don't realize anything is wrong until they experience a symptom like blurred vision of a heart problem. By then, it's too late to prevent the disease.

When you have diabetes your body can't properly convert food into energy. This results in harmful levels of sugar building up in the blood rather than fueling the muscles, tissues and brain. Those at highest risk for type 2 diabetes include anyone over 45 years old who is sedentary, overweight (or obese) and has a parent or sibling with the disease. If a woman had diabetes when she was pregnant, she's at higher risk as are blacks, Native Americans and Hispanics.

Living to avoid diabetes means...

- Controlling both blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels,

- Staying physically active as an active lifestyle can prevent diabetes,

- Eating a healthy, balanced diet, that has fruits and veggies, smaller portions and fewer sweetened drinks,

- Not smoking.

The Best Diabetes Prevention Continued...

The thing to understand is that you don't have to overhaul the way you live all at once. Taking small steps can combine to be great strides in staying healthy and preventing a disease like type 2 diabetes. So curb the portion size of foods loaded with fat and calories and you're off to a good start. Research has found that losing just 7% of your body weight... about 15 pounds for someone weighing in at 200 pounds... can delay or prevent the onset of disease.

If you have trouble doing that 30 minutes of exercise all at once, try three ten minute activity breaks instead. Take the stairs, park at the far end of the lot, walk instead of taking public transportation, work in the yard... there are plenty of small, simple ways to get more activity into your daily routine, you just have to look for them.

When it comes to losing weight, the truth is slow and steady is best. So set a realistic, modest goal for yourself and track your progress. Write down what you eat, what you drink and how much you exercise. Learn what the recommended number of calories is for someone your size and try to stay close to that. Little by little, these healthy changes will start to build on each other, and you'll be feeling better, doing more than ever.

To your good health,
