8 Flu Fighting ToolsDear Reader,
In our continuing efforts to keep you all flu-free this winter, we've brought together eight essential items you'll need to get the most nutrients from the foods you eat, and to cope with flu symptoms so you can be comfortable and get the rest you need to recover. While the best defense we have is the flu vaccine, here are some other good gadgets you might want to have around... just in case.
1. Humidifiers are a good way to fight chapped lips and dry skin, especially under your nose, during flu season. These machines help keep the air moist, and may even stop the spread of flu based on the findings of a 2009 study appearing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
2. Nasal strips help to pull your nostrils open in an effort to ease congestion and are especially useful at night. Some even have menthol, a vaporized extract from plants known to relieve congestion and make breathing easier.
3. Neti pots are an ancient nasal irrigation system that flushes the sinus with warm salt water. It can ease the congestion that often appears with the flu, but don't overuse it. Those who irrigated daily were more likely to get sinus infections according to the findings of a 2009 study presented at a recent American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology meeting. Be sure to use distilled water or boiled tap water that's cooled to get rid of organisms that can cause serious illness.
4. Online flu trackers like Google Flu Trends let you see where the flu is and take precautions if you're living in an area, or planning to travel to an area with lots of cases. The data lines up with national statistics issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

8 Flu Fighting Tools Continued...
5. Online pill identification will help you keep from wasting medicine that's out of the package and without directions. There are online tools for identifying the pills, caplets and capsules you've collected that no longer have their original packaging. Now you can identify them and take them safely.
6. Veggie steamer lets you prepare veggies in a way that is sure to give your body the essential nutrients in the best way possible. Steaming preserves flu fighting antioxidants according to a report in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry from 2008. If you don't have a steamer, boiling vegetables is a healthy option too.
7. Soup maker helps you fill up on the vital fluids you need when you're suffering from flu symptoms. Making your own soup gives you fluids, vitamins along with some decongesting spices and helpful steam to boot. Ginger and garlic are great for improving taste and getting things flowing in the sinuses. Hot peppers are another good choice, if you can handle them.
8. Juicer is a great way to make the most of fluids by adding immunity boosting vitamins and antioxidants to your drink. Mix oranges and green tea, ginger and a bit of honey for a tasty drink that's good for you too.
To your good health,
Kirsten Whittaker
