6. Dry mustard: We're talking about the spice, not the mustard that comes out of a tube. Researchers from Oxford Polytechnic Institute in England found that one teaspoon of dry mustard can speed up the metabolic rate by nearly 25%.

7. Tumeric: It's the vivid orange spice that's found most in India. It is known to help break down fat and regulate your metabolism while also helping to lower the risk of diabetes according to a study from Columbia University.

8. Ginger: This spice can control appetite, help you digest and remove toxins from the body. Not only that, it even raises the body temperature, so it gives your metabolism a boost as well.

We should also mention that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has linked the following items to some serious side effects (even death) so stay away, no matter what you read or what someone tells you.

- Herbal laxatives are often sold as a diet tea and include cascara, senna, buckthorn, aloe and rhubarb root. These can cause cramps, diarrhea and more serious bowel problems.

- Ephedra is also sold as ma huang and in high enough doses can bring up blood pressure and heart rate while also stimulating the central nervous system. The FDA lists more than 800 reports of side effects linked to the use of this herb. People have had heart palpitations, seizures, strokes, chest pain, heart attack as well as being associated with at least two deaths.

- Herbal fen-phen has Ephedra as the main ingredient and has not even been shown to work in clinical trials. It's misuse has been associated with some pretty serious side effects, heartbeat irregularities to death from either heart attack or stroke.
