Statins and Exercise Best For Lowering Cholesterol

Dear Reader,

Anyone can have high cholesterol, now there's news on how to get those numbers under control. A new study appearing in The Lancet finds that people who exercise and take statin drugs to bring down their cholesterol can dramatically cut their risk of dying - reassuring to the many who take these drugs today in hopes of doing just that. At present, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate almost 71 million American adults have high cholesterol, a key risk factor when it comes to heart disease. Even with all we know and the technology at our disposal, heart disease remains the leading cause of both disability and death in U.S. men and women.

Lead researcher Peter Kokkinos, a professor in the cardiology department at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, points out that what statins do and what exercise does provide independent benefits, when you combine the two you get even better results.

The research involved analyzing the medical records of over 10,000 veterans who had high cholesterol who'd been treated in veteran's hospitals in either Washington, D.C. or Palo Alto CA. Of the total, 9,700 were men, 343 were women. The team judged the fitness levels of the subjects by looking at the results of standard treadmill exercise tolerance exams that had been given.

Fewer deaths happened among the subjects who were taking statins and were also fit physically. Over ten years, those who were the most fit had the lowest risk of dying, reducing their risk by about 60%, whether or not they were taking cholesterol lowering medications. The reduction in risk was not explained by other risk factors for heart disease like age, weight, ethnicity, gender or history of heart disease.

The exercise we're talking about here is regular and moderately intense, not anything considered vigorous. That 30 minutes each day of brisk walking will do it. This regular approach works because is stresses the body, a natural way to make it stronger. About 150 minutes of brisk walking each week is really all you need.

Statins and Exercise Best For Lowering Cholesterol Continued...

The statin drugs we know best are Lipitor (atorvastatin), Lescol (fluvastatin), Pravachol (pravastatin), Crestor (rosuvastatin) and Zocor (simvastatin). Statins have been proven in many trials to reduce heart events and all cause mortality in both men and women who are at risk for cardiovascular disease. Some doctors believe these drugs are best for patients where lifestyle modifications have failed to bring down the numbers. For those who can't take these drugs because of side effects, the good news is exercise alone will do just as much to reduce your risk.

For those taking statins, you mortality is almost 35% lower than it is for those who don't take these medications. If you exercise, your mortality rate goes down as your fitness level goes up, to the point where a person can see a 70% reduction in mortality. Pretty impressive numbers - and both actions well within your control.

Important to understand that no one is saying exercise is a replacement for statin drugs. The very best results were seen in those taking satins who were also fit - doing the most they could to keep their bodies healthy, and succeeding.

To your good health,
