These 5 Fruits Fight The Flu
Dear Reader,
Sometimes it's hard to get the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables a day... but with flu season upon us, there's never been a better time to seek out health boosting foods. After all, a smart way to protect yourself from illness is to build up the strength of your own immune system. Getting sick this season is not inevitable, you can take some steps to protect yourself.
Here are some tasty fruits that experts suggest show promise in boosting your immune system...
Apples are the most popular source of those beneficial antioxidants in the diet. A single apple has an antioxidant effect that equals 1,500 mg of vitamin C, recognized for decades as being powerful when it comes to colds and flu. The tasty treat is also full of flavonoids that are showing the potential to fight both heart disease and cancer.
Bananas are one of your top food sources of vitamin B6 so they help to cut fatigue, stress, depression and even insomnia. High in magnesium, this soft, tasty fruit gives you nutrients that help keep bones strong as well as potassium that helps to fight high blood pressure and heart disease. They also serve to nourish the "good" bacteria in your digestive system.
Cranberries have more antioxidants than many other popular fruits or vegetables. One serving brings you five times the amount found in diet stars like broccoli. Cranberries function as a natural probiotic that enhances good bacteria in the digestive tract and helps protect you from foodborne illness.
Grapefruit, the dieters' staple, is naturally packed with vitamin C and also has compounds known as limonoids that bring down cholesterol. The red grapefruit is recognized as a great source of cancer fighter lycopene.
Papayas have 250% of the recommended daily allowance for vitamin C, so a single papaya can boot that oncoming cold. This exotic fruit is loaded with beta-carotene as well as vitamins C and E that work to bring down inflammation through the body. This can lessen the effects of conditions like asthma.
It's important to recognize that a run down body... one that isn't resting, isn't eating the right foods, isn't managing stress well, offers an inviting place for organisms. And since colds and flu are so much more common in the colder months, if this is you, you're leaving yourself an open target for a nasty illness.

These 5 Fruits Fight The Flu Continued...
Beyond adding any, or all, of these good for you fruits to your diet, here are some other things you can do to prevent the flu...
1. Wash your hands as the flu virus is spread by both direct (sharing a drink) and indirect (a cough sends germs out into air/onto surfaces) contact.
2. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
3. Cover sneezes and coughs with a tissue and throw it away immediately. You can also cough/sneeze into your sleeve and try not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
4. Use alcohol based hand sanitizer when you can't wash with soap and water, but be careful, overuse of these products can cause trouble.
5. Try to avoid, or limit your contact with anyone who has cold/flu symptoms or reports feeling unwell. Someone with flu can spread it to anyone who is within 6 feet.
To your good health,
