Beet Juice Lowers High Blood Pressure

Dear Reader,

Downing a brimming, richly colored glass of beet juice may have an immediate impact on blood pressure, bringing it down according to recent Australian research that appears in Nutrition Journal. The juice is best when mixed with other fruits or veggies, and unlike many foods, you'll want to peel the beet before you juice it. About a half a beet per serving of juice works best, giving you benefits without side effects.

Earlier work has found that beet juice (beetroot juice) can lower blood pressure in the lab. This latest work is the first to look at how it works when added to a healthy subject's diet, without making any other diet or lifestyle changes. The experts tell us it's a high concentration of beneficial nitrates in the beets that bring all the benefits.

According to the Australian study, within hours of drinking beet juice, systolic blood pressure (that top number, representing when the heart beats) was reduced by an average of 4 to 5 points for a small group of healthy men. Though the drop seems small, it's actually quite impressive when you apply it to a public health level where this drop in blood pressure would bring a 10% decrease in deaths as a result of heart disease.

The work included 30 subjects, 15 men and 15 women, who drank either 17.6 ounces of a drink that was three quarters beet juice and one quarter apple juice. There was a placebo drink used in the research as well. The subjects drank and were monitored for a full 24 hours, and the same process was repeated two weeks later with only the juices drunk being switched out.

For both men and women, the results demonstrate a trend to lower systolic blood pressure readings in just six hours after they drank the juice. When the team limited their analysis to just the men, they saw a big reduction of almost 4.7 points for those who drank the beet juice. Earlier work has supported the idea that beet juice might be more effective in lowering blood pressure for men, with the effect not as strong in women.

This might be explained by the age of the females in the study, and that they were taking prescription medications like birth control pills.

The thing that's exciting for researchers is that they can see an effect from a single dose according to study lead Leah Coles, Ph.D., who is a research fellow at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute located in Melbourne Australia.
