Family Meals Boost Child's Fruit and Veggies Intake

Dear Reader,

Once again, kids appear to learn more from what we do than what we say. It's true... researchers in the UK have found that eating meals as a family helps build healthy eating habits in kids, even if you do this only one or two times a week. The current recommendations for children when it comes to eating good for you fruits and veggies are five portions (about 400 grams) per day.

The study, appearing in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health found that those who ate together all the time achieved this goal, while those who ate together sometimes also came close. It appears that watching parents, brothers and sisters eating good foods gets these good habits started in younger children.

The research examined just under 2,400 children who were attending 52 elementary schools located in south London. Food diaries were kept at home and at school so researchers could track all the foods and drinks the children consumed during a 24-hour period. The parents were also asked about their own attitudes to fruit and veggies, how often families ate at a table and if they cut up fruits and veggies for their children.

The research saw that 656 families reported almost always eating meals together at a table, 768 did this a few times per week, while 92 of the families in the study reported never eating meals this way. The kids in the "always" group also ate 5 portions (125g) of either fruits or veggies, compared to 4.6 (95g) portions in the "sometimes" group, and a mere 3.3 portions in the "never" group. Seeing a parent eating fruits and veggies, or having these foods cut up helped boost the intake.

Sitting at the table, instead of mindless eating in front of the TV, seems to help kids establish better eating habits. Habits that die hard. So as adults they make better food choices and reduce risks of things like heart disease and type 2 diabetes, maybe even some forms of cancer as well as providing the body with a source of essential vitamins and minerals, fiber and other substances that we are learning are also key to good health.

Family Meals Boost Child's Fruit and Veggies Intake Continued...

Professor Janet Cade of the University of Leeds' who supervised the study, believes that watching the way parents and siblings eat, and the types of foods they enjoy is so important in creating a child's own habits and preferences when it comes to foods. Dietary habits are established in childhood, so promoting the family meal is far more important than we've made it so far. This habit needs to have a more prominent place in public health initiatives.

Though the study only looked at a single day, it did focus on the diets of a large, diverse group of people. We know that the demands of modern life often keep a whole family from sitting around the table at dinner. But the research finds that even just Sunday lunch can help improve the diets of young children. With all the focus of interventions during the school day, it's nice to see that the things that happen at home also are influential... how important parents, and what they do, is to our children.

To your good health,
