Secret Of Greek Island Of Old Age
Dear Reader,
Now here's something to think about. The inhabitants of a small Greek island live an average 10 years longer than the rest of those in Western Europe. The island, Ikaria, is a place of fresh air and sunshine, where people eat fresh veggies washed down with goat's milk, where they live a friendly, easy-going open door lifestyle and getting around naturally keeps you fit because of the mountainous terrain. Named from the Greek myth of Icarus who plunged into the sea nearby after his wax and feather wings melted, the island has natural hot springs, making it a a health destination for many years.
Or maybe it's the wine. You see, wine made commercially has preservatives and has been processed, while the wine they make here on Ikaria is pure.
Then there's the story of Stamatis Moraitis. Forty-five years ago, diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and living in the U.S., the cost of his impending funeral in America sent him back to Ikaria where he could be buried with his parents. He went home to reconnect with friends he'd known as a boy and they started drinking together. He thought that at least he'd die happy.
Every day he got together with these friends and soon began getting stronger. At the nine-month point he felt good... eleven months and he felt better still. Now, 45 years later, he tells the story with his own flair and spirit. A few years back he came to the U.S. to find those doctors, but he couldn't, and laughs that, "They were all dead."
This isn't the only story of this kind on Ikaria. Maybe it's just "urban legend" or "myth" but it's enough to get science and doctors to the island, not much off the coast of Turkey, to get evidence of what's going on here. According to author Dan Buettner and National Geographic, these places are one of a small number of "blue zones" where people who live there enjoy amazing longevity. Some of the others include Okinawa in Japan, Sardinia in Italy, and state side, Loma Linda in California.
Most of the good research in Ikaria has been done by the University of Athens, by experts who have studied islanders over 65. On average, the 8,000 residents live 10 years longer than most Europeans and are in far better health to the end of life. Dr. Christina Chrysohoou who is a cardiologist from the University of Athens who's studied the people said they do get the same sorts of illnesses as all older people, just later in life. Those who live here extend the quality of their life for many years. In Ikaria heart disease is diagnosed about ten years later than the norm of 55 to 60 for the rest of the world.

Secret Of Greek Island Of Old Age Continued...
There are many things that might explain this longevity.
- Ikarians eat lots of fish and veggies, low levels of meat, and most food is cooked in olive oil. There are lots of wild greens and herbs gathered from the hillsides and used for both food and medicinal reasons.
- 6 out of 10 Ikarians over the age of 90 are still active, compared with about 20% at this age in other places.
- Many people make a daily brew of mountain tea from dried herbs like sage, thyme, mint and chamomile, sweetened by honey from local bees. It's said to cure everything.
- Many such wild herbs are used the world over as traditional medications. They're rich in antioxidants and have diuretics that both lower blood pressure.
And there are other things about the island lifestyle that may also be important. The rates of smoking are fairly low, a nap at midday is the norm, the pace of life is slower and people socialize a lot with friends and family, drinking just a bit of wine as they do. We know that extended families give older folks a key role in society, and for this population the levels of depression and dementia are low.
To your good health,
