The Health Scoop On Spices

Dear Reader,

Spices... revered over the centuries for their ability to add flavor, as well as their benefits to health, but can they do wonders for a hangover or help you shed those extra pounds gained over the holidays? As far back as 2500 years ago Chinese philosopher/teacher Confucius suggested eating ginger at every meal to help digestion and yet all these years later modern experts have yet to reach a scientific consensus on what spices do for health.

Let's take a look at what we know today.

Spices act as a stimulus to our digestive system, they can ease digestive disorders and some are helpful as antiseptic explains Dr. Krishnapura Srinivasan who is a scientist at the Central Food Technological Research Institute located in Mysore, India.

Researchers from the Human Performance Lab located at Appalachian State University wondered if culinary doses of red pepper and turmeric would reduce chronic inflammation in overweight female subjects aged 40 to 72 years old. The hypothesis was that inflammation in overweight subjects could be brought on by oxidative stress. This process involves chemically reactive molecules (free radicals) that trigger physiological events or do damage to tissue. The month long clinical trial brought negative results, no evidence that either spice altered inflammation by impacting oxidative stress.

This might mean that higher doses and longer testing periods are what's needed to show the true result. A month isn't a very long time.

When it comes to weight loss, cayenne pepper is another name that's tossed about as an option. A cayenne pepper and maple syrup diet made the news in 2007 when Beyonce reported dropping twenty pounds after supposedly following it for two weeks. While we're not advocating that kind of eating plan, there may be something to the idea that red cayenne pepper is useful to those who don't normally eat these chili peppers. More research must be done to confirm this idea.

When it comes to thermogenesis, the process that impacts both appetite and metabolism that happens after ingesting some spices, a team from Perdue University examined the effect of red pepper. The researchers found that as body temperature went up the metabolic rate did as well. What's more, the desire to eat fatty foods was decreased in those who ate a red pepper as part of a meal when compared to those who didn't. That's an easy thing to try for yourself.

There's another study out of Kyoto University in Japan that found males in the country who ate a normal diet along with a red pepper extract called CH19-Sweet saw slightly decreased body fat and weight after 14 days.

Trouble is, there just isn't enough well done research about spices to make recommendations. Of course reducing the amount of sodium we take in is an important part of health, cutting risks of high blood pressure and strokes, and the flavor that comes naturally from spices helps in this area by reducing the need for salt in cooking. Someone very much advocating for the benefits of spices is chef Gurpareet Bains. He believes spices are the most anti-oxidizing foods around, are very powerful and even has several unique and tasty recipes for meals.

The Health Scoop On Spices Continued...

As for a spice based cure for that hangover? Mr. Bains suggests making chai with spices like nigella seeds, fennel, cardamom and ground ginger. Nigella is considered a multi targeting spice, especially if you have cold and flu or an allergic reaction. Add a teaspoon into water, simmer for ten minutes covered, pour over mint leaves and honey and you'll have a tea that does more than one thing for your health.

When cooking with spices there are many, many choices in terms of recipes. Rather than expecting a single spice to help you shed pounds, use them to replace sugar or salt so that your dishes are more healthful overall. Losing weight still is most impacted by calories in being less than those burned.

To your good health,
