How Your Mind Sees Reality

Dear Reader,

We know the brain as the fundamental control center of the body has billions of nerves that can process information from our bodies, operate internal organs, generate thoughts/feelings, store/recall memories and control our movements. Fundamental to the way our brains work is something we now know as taxonomy, a grouping of objects into abstract categories, that's been explored in great detail thanks to a recent study from scientists at the University of California, Berkeley who were trying to understand more about how our brains work.

At the most basic level, we perceive the responses of our nervous system to an endless flow of electromagnetic waves and biochemical reactions. Our brains then slot neural responses into sensory paths we know as sight, smell, sound, hearing and touch. But sometimes the boundaries between our senses can be a bit fuzzy.

Still our brains are especially good at picking out certain chunks of sensory experience and associating these with other stimuli. So if you hear purring and feel something rubbing against your leg, your brain knows those two things are related to your four footed feline companion and your brain groups the whole thing under the heading "cat".

Over the years encounters with cats have taught you things, and this determines what areas of the brain will perk up when that cat comes calling. But just where is the category "cat" in the brain? And is it related to "dog" or "animal"? A team of experts led by Alexander Huth at UC Berkeley's remarkably brilliant Gallant Lab decided they'd answer these questions in the most detailed way they could, by capturing the response of the brain to any kind of object they might find.

The team collected reactions from subjects, who sat within an MRI scanner and viewed over 1,300 objects and categories. The brain responses were arranged into a tree of object and action groups, and a map of response gradients across the whole surface of the subjects' brain. It's what the experts call a continuous semantic space.

The team saw that the relationships between our brains' groups are multidimensional - things can be more "animal like" or more "man made". Some relationships make sense, while others are less clear. The team did see that different subjects do share a similar semantic layout. In the future the team expects to find more subtle response dimensions that tell about an objects speed or size.

How Your Mind Sees Reality Continued...

We understand the meaning of an object in terms of the meanings of other things, other chunks of reality to which our brains have given certain characteristics. There are associations that are more strongly (or more weakly) correlated to other associations. And this raises all kinds of questions... some so technical they would make your head spin.

You need to understand that a single three-dimensional pixel (fMRI voxel) represents the action of almost one million neurons, and at this resolution, it's impossible to say exactly what the neural activity is doing.

Whatever the research finds, in our brains meaning and association go together. Even our most abstract concepts depend on our own experiences. Going forward researchers hope to have a more complete and detailed idea of how the brain is organized. Even today the online brain viewer is the most detailed look ever at the visual workings and organization of a sample human brain.

To your good health,

P.S: Nike...Ebay...Amazon and Walmart pay for your opinion

Fortune 500 companies make their money by people like you and I buying their products.

But how do they know what we want to buy? Easy they pay to find out the products we like, where we shop and what we buy.

In a nutshell big businesses need people to tell them what products to make.

People like Michelle McAllister - a 34 year old full-time mother of two. Michelle and many others help "big business" make millions, although they haven't got any marketing or sales experience.

In fact Michelle knows absolutely nothing about business, but she does know what she likes...

And that's exactly the information these companies are after and will pay you for.

Click through to discover how Michelle quickly profits by telling big companies her opinion and how you can do it too...
