Six Ways To Keep Your Heart Healthy

Dear Reader,

Keeping your heart healthy really comes down to some simple, common sense things. Eat right. Stress less. Exercise more. Watch your weight. Don't smoke. You may be able to do some of these, but managing them all is sometimes a real challenge. Here are six hints that might help.

Adults should be getting at least 30 minutes of exercise on five (or more) days of the week, every week, to promote a healthy, strong heart. The heart is a muscle after all, and muscles need exercise to stay strong. Hint #1 is to work some aspect of play into your activity and you're more likely to get it in. Play kickball. Walk your dog. Shoot hoops. Walk the mall.

While the goal is at least a half hour of exercise each day, breaking it up is just fine. So a ten minute walk in the morning, a workout with weights at lunch and some weeding in the yard before dinner add up, and let you get things done at the same time. In any workout, you want to get your heart rate up, so you're a bit breathless but can still carry on a conversation according to Susan Moores, RD, MS from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

There are also diet rules you need to memorize that will help you and this is the substance of Hint #2. Limit the bad fat as this single change brings impressive results, especially for those eating the typical American diet. Just by eating less saturated fat you can cut your risk of heart issues in half according to Christine Gerbstadt, MD. RD. Cut the salt by limiting the processed foods you eat. Eat at least 2 and a half cups of veggies and fruits a day and you'll bring down your risk for heart disease, stroke and even cancer. The plus here, all these suggestions have fewer calories but they fill you up too. Whole grains are another good choice, known to help lower cholesterol and blood pressure and help prevent type 2 diabetes.

Working toward a healthy body weight, Hint #3 is the natural outcome of genuinely eating right and being more active. Doctors know that carrying too much weight raises the risk of a heart attack, a devastating stroke as well as having high blood pressure. The positive here is that even a weight loss of a few pounds gets you on the road to a stronger, healthier heart.

Stress is yet another key threat to the heart, and Hint #4 involves making time to relax and unplug every day. Stress can wreak havoc on the body and the mind, so be sure to make the time for yourself... to just be... on a regular basis. You need to recharge so that you can continue to take on your responsibilities - drained and stressed isn't the way to face the challenges of everyday living.

Six Ways To Keep Your Heart Healthy Continued...

Hint #5 also involves making time for yourself, by keeping those appointments for checkups and tests. Regular checks of blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol are important. Two things that can hurt your heart, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, are both without outward symptoms. You don't know if you have them unless you see a doctor, get tested.

And if you still smoke, you've heard all the dangers - cancer, lung disease, better chance of a heart attack - and it hasn't changed anything. Our final Hint, #6, is for those who smoke - you need to stop. There's no one "best" way to quit, everyone is different and needs to make the decision to give up smoking first, and then find the way to make it stick. Medication, a support group, counseling or some combination have all been shown to help people give up smoking, once and for all. They can do the same for you so that you're richer, healthier and have a stronger heart.

To your good health,
