Diet Drinks Link To Depression
Dear Reader,
How many of us reach for a diet drink to go with lunch, to be a companion on a busy afternoon? A large study in the U.S. including over 250,000 people, has found a link between diet drinks (soda and other artificially sweetened choices) and depression, but experts remain cautious about the connection. The work is set to be presented, according to press from the American Academy of Neurology, at the annual meeting to be held mid March 2013.
To conduct the study, the team began in 1995 by asking older U.S. adults about their consumption of beverages. In 2004-2006 the team surveyed the group to see if they had been diagnosed with depression. They saw that those who drank four or more cans of soda a day were almost 30% more likely to have been officially diagnosed with depression than those who didn't drink this beverage at all. And then there's this: the study subjects, aged 50 to 71 all living here in the U.S. who drank 4 cups of coffee a day were 10% less apt to be diagnosed with depression than those who drank no coffee during the decade long study.
The findings suggest that cutting down on artificially sweetened drinks, or replacing them with unsweetened coffee, might be a natural way to lower a risk for depression according to investigator Honglei Chen, M.D., Ph.D. and a half dozen collaborators from the National Institutes of Health who conducted the research
There's been a lot of testing concerning the safety of sweeteners like aspartame, and regulators assure continuing safety. You've probably noticed that "soda" is the diet bad guy in both the U.S. and U.K.
It's also important to note that depression can be influenced by many other factors than what you might drink, and the findings might not even translate to other populations. The study has presented a possible link, but is far from showing cause and effect. Statistics from research in the American Family Physician show that almost 16% of adults over 65 are clinically depressed, 3% have major depression.
For those who are coping with depression, you need to stick with your treatment plan and not be swayed by a single study on a large, but older, population, though the findings might give you reason to limit the artificial sweeteners you take in.

Diet Drinks Link To Depression Continued...
Also there may be other reasons that coffee and diet drinks are tied up with depression. Two big ones are obesity and diabetes, both common among older people. Those who are trying to lose weight, or are diabetic might prefer diet drinks to help control calories and keep the blood sugar in line. Experts want you to know that non-caloric sweeteners can certainly be useful in your efforts to lose weight, or for diabetics' blood sugar control. No one is suggesting that anyone replace diet soda with coffee.
For the rest of us, caution when interpreting the study is in order according to Chen and others. Older people should not be lining up at coffee places to cut their depression risks. More work is needed; though the findings are intriguing and do support a small, but growing amount of evidence that link artificially sweetened drinks with poor health.
To your good health,
