Report Ranks Diet Plans
Dear Reader,
It seems the people at U.S. News & World Report are pretty busy... busy ranking all manner of things from colleges to cars, from hospitals to law firms, it's amazing the amount of ranking that's been done. In the area of health, we find the latest ranking of just under 30 diet plans for the year, the magazine again turning to experts in the area of diet and nutrition to rank different diet plans to help people make better decisions about nutrition.
Though many dismiss it as ordinary... obscure... this year DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) has made it three in a row, three years that the eating plan has been identified as the best overall diet. It's important to understand that this plan wasn't created for weight loss, but as a natural way to fight high blood pressure, so if your goal this year is weight loss, you'll want to check out the best weight loss diet rankings.
After DASH on the Best Diets Overall list came the TLC (Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes) diet created by the National Institutes of Health. Next up were the Mayo Clinic Diet, the Mediterranean Diet and Weight Watchers, all in a three-way tie for third place on the list that included 29 plans in all. Other well-known diets that cracked the top ten on the list were the Jenny Craig plan and the plan from the TV show "The Biggest Loser".
Toward the bottom of the Best Diets Overall list was the low carb, high protein Paleo Diet, a diet nearly impossible to follow in modern times. A look though the complete list, especially those near the bottom is interesting, and enlightening to many. I've tried some of those diets, I bet you have too.
Some of the other diet rankings you'll find? There's one for the best weight loss diet, best diabetes diet, best heart healthy diet, best commercial diet and easiest to follow diet. Weight Watchers topped the best weight loss, commercial diet plan and easy to follow lists.

Report Ranks Diet Plans Continued...
To get ranked well on the lists a diet has to be fairly easy to follow, packed with good nutrition, offering safe and effective weight loss and protection against both diabetes and heart disease. The experts were frank about the diets that didn't measure up.
The good thing about the rankings is that you can take a look at all the eating plans, with your own goal in mind, and compare them. Once you've narrowed it down, look at the diets carefully, see which one fits best with your personality, the way you live, Some people don't do well on low carb diets, or are turned off by just add water plans. Think about what worked, and what didn't, the last time you tried to follow a diet. Too restrictive? Not enough direction?
Also remember that eating is only part of the healthy equation. You need to be active. If your plan doesn't prescribe a specific amount of exercise, you're on your own, so put some thought into an exercise routine as well.
In the end, you need to ask yourself, how long can I stay on this plan? If you can't stick with a diet over the long haul, you'll end up right back where you started in just a few months.
To your good health,
Kirsten Whittaker
