Fast Food Linked To Asthma And Eczema

Dear Reader,

Another reason to limit how much fast food you and your family eat. Researchers who examined global disease and dietary patterns have found that eating fast food at least three times a week might lead to higher rates of asthma and eczema in children. This comes from a study of over 500,000 children in over 50 nations appearing in the journal Thorax, suggesting that a nutrition starved diet that includes a lot of fast food may be the reason for rising levels of both these allergy related conditions in our children.

Asthma is the same frightening, difficult condition for children as it is for adults, a problem that causes the airways of the lungs to swell up and narrow, bringing symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest and coughing. Possible triggers for children include exposure to airborne pollen as well as getting a cold or another respiratory infection. And while asthma in children can't be cured, it can be managed quite effectively so that your child can do all the things he/she loves, while keeping symptoms under control and damage being done to growing lung tissues.

Usually those who have been diagnosed with asthma don't need to stick to a special diet, although there are cases where some foods like cow's milk, eggs, shellfish, fish, yeast products, nuts and some colorings and preservatives used in foods can make symptoms worse. Researchers believe that eating healthy might decrease your risk of being diagnosed with asthma, and that it may also have a helpful effect for patients already dealing with this condition.

Eczema on the other hand is a long-term skin disorder that brings scaly, itchy rashes to the skin surface and is due to a hypersensitivity reaction, almost like an allergy, on the surface of the skin. It's most common in infants, starting as early as 2 to 6 months of age, and many outgrow the problem by early adulthood. Those who have eczema often also have asthma or seasonal allergies, and there may be a family history of allergic problems like asthma, hay fever or eczema itself.

The subjects in the research who ate fast food were more likely to have severe asthma, eczema and also itchy watery eyes. In the study, kids in their early teens who ate three or more fast food meals per week had a 39% higher risk of being diagnosed with severe asthma. The six and seven year olds had a 27% higher risk for this breathing condition.

Fast Food Linked To Asthma And Eczema Continued...

On the other hand, eating lots of fruits appears to offer some protection. Eating three or more servings each week cut a subject's risk of severe asthma, eczema and rhinoconjunctivitis by from11% to as much as 14%. Many asthma organizations advice patients to eat a healthy, balanced diet that includes five servings of either fruits or veggies each day and fish more than two times a week.

We know that though it tastes good, and is convenient in our busy lives, fast food has high levels of unhealthy, saturated and trans fats, which can affect immunity. It's also clear that fruits are naturally loaded with antioxidants as well as other beneficial compounds, while also offering fewer calories too. So if you have a child who deals with either of these conditions, it may be smart to limit the amount of fast food and see if this makes any difference in the symptoms.

To your good health,
