Berries May Cut Heart Attack Risk

Dear Reader,

You've heard that berries are good for all kinds of things, now we have a large, new study that find eating three of more servings of either blueberries and strawberries each week might help bring down the risk of heart attack in women. The work appears in the journal Circulation. Heart attacks happen when plaque blocks blood flow to the heart and it's important to understand that the signs of a heart attack are different for men and women. There may be no chest pressure for the woman but she may experience shortness of breath, pressure/pain in the lower chest/upper abdomen, dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting, upper back pressure or extreme fatigue.

The research involved nearly 94,000 young and middle-aged females who were taking part in the Nurses' Health Study II. The subjects filled out questionnaires on what they ate every four years for a full 18 years. During that time, 405 subjects did have heart attacks, but women who ate the most strawberries and blueberries were 32% less likely to experience a heart attack compared to those who ate these foods once a month or less.

The berries held up even for those women who ate a diet rich in other good for you fruits and vegetables. The benefit was independent of other risk factors for heart attack such as advancing years, high blood pressure, a family history of heart attacks, high body mass intake, lack of exercise, being a smoker, as well as caffeine and alcohol intakes.

The findings are rather compelling, even to cardiologists like Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum from New York's Lenox Hill Hospital, who took no part in the study. She finds the results interesting, and she suggests that both women and men add berries to the diet, making them part of their intake of good for you fruits. One serving is equal to about a cup of blueberries or strawberries.

The findings give no clue to what about the berries was bringing the lower risk of heart attack among the subjects. The study also cannot prove a cause and effect relationship between berries and heart attacks, though we know that both blueberries and strawberries have high levels of compounds that could help to widen arteries, countering plaque buildup that comes before a heart attack.

Berries May Cut Heart Attack Risk Continued...

Berries are the most common sources of these beneficial substances, known as anthocyanins (a flavonoid), in the U.S. diet. These substances are a natural part of red and blue colored fruits (and veggies) so you'll also get lots from eating cherries, grapes, eggplant, black currants, plums and other richly colored foods. What's more, berries are also a great source of nutrients like vitamin C, potassium and folate.

It's likely that the benefit of berries would be the same for men as it is for women. More work is needed to confirm the findings, but until then, it will do no harm to add more servings of fruits and veggies to your diet. Especially the richly colored ones. Try cranberries, acai berries, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries.

When it comes to surviving a heart attack, getting help right away is key. Estimates suggest that heat attacks strike people about every 34 seconds... more often than you think. So if you have (or are with someone having) symptoms, don't wait more than five minutes before calling 911.

To your good health,
